Given the extra time people have during the holiday period & the openness to new regimes this time in the calendar, I will be sharing my top 3 Ayurvedic practices that have proven to be extremely effective for me.
Ayurveda is a sister system to yoga. ~ As in the name, both have come down to us via the Vedas ~ Ayurvedic practices encompass a wide range of largely preventative practical lifestyle suggestions for maximum vitality. Modern western Science is continually affirming plenty of these ancient practices to be true. Regardless, the adoption of certain practices has so obviously improved aspects of my life, I don’t need to be proven externally. As with all practices- trying for yourself is the only way to testify a method’s effectiveness!
My
No 1. Is WAKE UP EARLY FOR ENERGY
In Ayurveda, the day is split up into different periods of time ruled by the 3 doshas. It is my experience that waking up late - after 7am - has me feeling sluggish all day long. This is because between 6-10am is a kapha (earth & water) time of day. However, 3-6am is a vata (air) time of day, and waking up around 6am infuses my day with more energy- even if I’ve had LESS sleep than if I let myself sleep more until 8am. Notice to see if you wake easily during sleep, if it is often within this vata window, many find this to be the case.
I try to be in bed by 10pm (when the last ship for sleep officially sails!) - the cut-off for the kapha time of day, when time transitions into Pitta’s domain (fire). Hence why I often get a second wind of renewed energy after 10pm.
This is my number one tip because it seems to defy logic, the the amount of sleep is less important than the time in which you rise. But it explains the inexplicable lethargy I sometime experience with more sleep. What to do with the extra waking time? Perhaps some meditation, some yoga, reading, a walk....
Try it! Tell me how you go!
