❗ New Voluntary Industry Guidelines for Baby Food and Drink published by

We are pleased to see that these new guidelines reference our recently published narrative review of commercial baby foods that we published in collaboration with the University of Glasgow.

The study found that:

🍇 Commercial baby foods are often nutritionally inadequate and/or high in sugar.
🫐 Snack foods and squeeze pouches are readily available, often sweet, and lack textural variety.
🍊 Marketing claims are often misleading and exploit parents/carers' fears to motivate use.

What are the key points of the new guidelines?

The new guidelines set limits on sugar and salt and urging businesses to make product labels honest and in line with UK public health recommendations

They are a small step in the right direction towards clamping down on the longstanding and widespread poor practices of the baby food industry

The DHSC’s plans to evaluate industry compliance with the guidelines 18 months from now and we look forward to seeing the evaluation plans

In the meantime, recently updated NHS guidelines caution against relying on shop-bought baby and toddler foods and remind parents that home-prepared foods are often healthier and cheaper.

It is vital that parents are given more support to feed their children diets based on nutritious minimally processed foods, as this will give them the best start in life.
