On my way back from a fantastic few days in Rotterdam presenting and delivering a workshop at the Aphasia Clinics Symposium 2026 on the theme “Global aphasia: no words, but still a lot to say”

A huge thank you to the organisers for inviting me. It was inspiring to hear of the pioneers who set up the symposium and to be part of its 14th year. Wonderful to network with Dutch colleagues and hear how my work and therapy programme is influencing clinical practice.

I forgot to take pictures at the actual conference 🙈 but did manage to take some while exploring Rotterdam!

It’s been an inspiring and informative few days in Aberdeen at the UK Stroke Forum Conference . It was an honour to chair a session and I loved hearing from so many people with lived experience of stroke. A clear theme emerged from the talks, the need for therapists to focus more on wellbeing and participation-helping people to live fulfilling lives. As always it’s always good to re-connect with old colleagues and network with new people at these events too!

This week I completed a three-day course on working with adults who stammer. It’s been a brilliant refresher for me. It is interesting how the area has evolved since I first trained. I love the growing focus on acceptance, openness, and supporting people to communicate with greater ease and authenticity rather than striving to be fluent or perfect!

Beyond ecstatic to have been awarded a Development and Skills Enhancement Award (DSE) from the National Institute for Health and Care Research which will support me in taking my research on global aphasia forward 🙌🏾🎉 I’m so grateful to everyone who’s supported me on this journey and can’t wait to get started!

It’s been a full week of presentations alongside my usual clinical and teaching commitments!
📣 First up was a webinar for the Portuguese Speech & Language Association, and then a full study day on at the National Hospital for Neurology & Neurosurgery. Can’t believe we had over 100 speech and language therapists attending both online and in person.

Feeling grateful for the opportunity to share, connect, and advocate for this group of clients

Today, I had the opportunity to train nurses and care workers on two critical topics: swallowing difficulties and tracheostomy weaning.

Understanding how to support people with swallowing difficulties is vital, as these can lead to serious complications if not managed correctly. We discussed the anatomy involved, common challenges, and effective strategies to ensure people can eat and drink safely.

We then dicussed some of the patients with tracheostomy and how we can support them to be more independent with their breathing and communication.

Last week, I had the privilege of attending the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists’ 80th anniversary celebration at Southwark Cathedral.

It was a moving and inspiring event, with powerful reflections on how far the profession has come—and the real-life impact speech and language therapists have had on people.

A personal highlight was unexpectedly bumping into my PhD supervisor, someone I haven’t seen in years but who played such a pivotal role in my journey. I’ll always be grateful for her encouragement, insight, and belief in me.
