⁣What is a serum and what are oils? ➡⠀

The great thing about serums is that they can be layered together, making them especially beneficial if you have a number of skin issues that need addressing. ⠀

When it comes to deciding which to apply first, the rule of thumb is to always start light and layer by consistency. ⠀

Lighter serums will be easily and quickly absorbed into the skin while heavier formulas such as oils seal in the ingredients and may take longer to absorb ⬇⠀

For serums that have more or less the same consistency, apply the one with the most targeted ingredients first. That means applying an antioxidant serum before a hydrating one 💦 ⠀

If you’re using oils, I would recommend the use of them in the evening as a reparative and hydrating step 🌙⠀

The reason why monthly facials are important for your skin health ⬇⠀

Not only do facials maintain hydration and prevent dead skin cell build up, they also keep your skin smooth, bright and allow a more efficient absorption rate of your skincare ingredients 💧 ⠀

The cycle you see above breaks down the process of what happens in the days and weeks following your treatment and signs to keep an eye out for when your next facial is due! 🔄📆💆‍♀️💆

⁣If you're new around here, I'll have you know I'm partial to a few cups of matcha a day. And yes, you really do get the caffeine high without the jitters and anxiety that comes along with that triple shot, extra hot skinny milk latte you just ordered at Starbucks 🍵 ⠀

Before I blow your mind with the benefits, the grade of Matcha you use is very important if you want to reap the healing properties. So, before you rush up from your office desk and run to the trendiest quirky coffee stall offering a matcha latte with whipped cream on top, let me talk you through what you need to know ➡⠀

Ever wonder why matcha is such a vibrant green? That’s thanks to the high amount of chlorophyll it contains. These natural plant compounds are essential for photosynthesis, the chemical reaction in which sunlight is transformed into energy. Interestingly enough, chlorophyll can protect our skin from sun damage and reduce photo-aging, which means less wrinkles and fewer sun spots. Chlorophyll also protects our skin by shielding it from impurities and chemicals in our environment that could clog our pores 🧬 ⠀

Another important compound found in matcha, epigallocatechin-3-gallate or EGCG for short, gives the powder great anti-bacterial and antibiotic properties that help with acne prone skin as well. Aside from its benefits on blemishes, this antioxidant promotes smoother and more supple skin due to its ability to rejuvenate skin cells and support skin structure. I'll take a jug full please!⠀

Thought that was it? Incredibly enough, matcha also has the power to reduce puffiness, skin inflammation, and dark under eye circles because of its high vitamin K content, a vitamin that promotes an increase in blood circulation 😍⠀

You know sunscreen is important, but when it begins to pill up and give a flaky appearance, skipping the step may be tempting. Here’s what to do instead 💡 ⠀

Pilling is not peeling. When you hear the term “pilling” in skin care, it means that products applied topically haven’t fully absorbed into the skin which leads to visible flaking and grittiness. Those little tiny balls? Pilling. This can be caused by a number of things, mainly coming down to the ingredients, skin preparation and how you’re applying everything. Inevitably, some ingredients are more prone to pilling than others, and you’ll most commonly see it occurring with silicone-based products ⬇⠀

Looking 👀 at ingredient lists is key to distinguish what’ll get along with each other. If you’re using a heavier cream or oil underneath your SPF, try to pay attention if it has silicones in it.⠀

Pilling can also occur if your skin isn’t ready to absorb skin care properly. Products absorb better onto the skin when it’s prepared in a proper manner. A good cleanse is key to having a good base in general, and exfoliating during the week keeps dead skin cells from interrupting the absorption process 🧼 ⠀

Alongside, make sure you’re not using too much product. Using an excessive amount of cream or product won’t do anything but sit on the skin and won’t allow SPF to properly absorb.⠀

📝TOP TIP — ⠀
When applying make up over your SPF, disposable beauty blenders are a game changer for reducing pilling. ⠀

Use a gentle pressing action with your blender, rather than disturbing the layers underneath with brushes or fingers which will help reduce the risk of the “rubber like” pilling effect.

⁣What is Keratosis Pilaris (KP)?⠀

Keratosis pilaris is a common and harmless skin condition that causes dry skin and tiny non itchy bumps. It usually affects your cheeks, upper arms, thighs and a majority of women are mainly affected by this condition. ⠀

KP is caused by the buildup of keratin, a hard protein that protects skin from harmful substances and infection. The keratin then blocks the opening of hair follicles, causing patches of rough, bumpy skin.⠀

It's not clear why keratin builds up in people with keratosis pilaris. It may occur in association with a genetic disease or with skin conditions such as atopic dermatitis. Dry skin tends to make keratosis pilaris worse.⠀

Here are some tips that can be helpful should it bother you ⠀

Do ✔⠀

🔸Moisturise your skin with a light non fragranced moisturiser ⠀
🔸Gently exfoliate your skin with a flannel, soft sponge or exfoliating mitt⠀
🔸Pat your skin dry instead of rubbing it after washing⠀
🔸Wash quicker - long hot showers/baths tend to dry the skin and may worsen KP ⠀
🔸Discontinue the use of perfumed soaps or bathing products that can dry out your skin - Sanex 0% shower gel is a good go-to⠀

Don’t ❌⠀

🔺Scratch, pick or aggressively rub your skin⠀
🔺Avoid hot baths and showers (cool to lukewarm is just right)⠀
🔺Do not use harsh scrubs/grains on your skin – this can make it worse
