Why do my eyes water?

Your eyes can water for many reasons:
Smoky environment
Being in a cold or windy environment
A foreign object in your eye such as an eyelash or a piece of grit
Allergies
A blocked tear duct
Dry eye syndrome

Treatment may not be needed if the watering isn't causing problems. If you are concerned about your eyes watering, the best first step is to consult your optical practice or failing this seek medical advice. In some areas you can also access a Minor Eye Conditions service at local optical practices free of charge on the NHS.

I see lots of black spots in front of my eyes - should I be worried?

Have you seen small black dots in front of your eyes? Many people have ‘floaters’, which are small irregularities or debris in the gel inside the eye. You might be aware of threads that appear to float in front of your vision, or something that looks like small pieces of cobweb. These spots and threads can be semi-transparent or dark and are called floaters. Often you are unaware that you have floaters: if they have been there since birth your eye and brain learn to ignore them. If you move your eye to try to look at a floater it is likely to move away in the direction you move your eye. You might only see them if you are staring at a light coloured surface or at the sky during the day.

Most of the time, floaters are remnants from when the eye developed. If you have this sort of floater you may have been aware of them for many years. For other people, the number of floaters increase with age. Occasionally an increase in floaters can be a sign of problems inside the eye. Some people find floaters a nuisance if they are visible much of the time, but most people become used to them. They rarely cause problems with vision.

If you have new floaters, then contact your optician for advice about your eye heath. A sudden onset of new floaters can be a serious eye condition so contacting your optician immediately is recommended.

Why should I wear spectacles?

People need spectacles for different reasons. If you need spectacles, the optometrist will write you a prescription. You may be long-sighted, which is also known as ‘hyperopia. If you are long-sighted you have to work harder to focus on close objects. If you are short-sighted also known as ‘myopia’ you will struggle to see distant objects. Many people need spectacles as they get older, as the crystalline lens inside the eye becomes less flexible and focussing on near objects becomes gradually more difficult.. This is known as presbyopia, and you may need reading glasses, bifocal or varifocals.

Whatever your eye condition, wearing your spectacles will help you see clearly, stay safe and reduce eye strain.
