Somatic Movement for Special Needs
- October 26th, 2019 - Islington

In this one day workshop you will learn how to combine Special Yoga practices with Somatic Movement. This course is suitable for practitioners with an interest in exploring the mind-body connection and how physical movement can regulate the nervous system through neuromuscular retraining. Discover how somatic movement develops body awareness and proprioception and learn how Somatic Movement combined with Special Yoga practices can help to relieve chronic tension, muscle spasms and help improve the stress response in people with special needs.

Come along and experience for yourself the benefits of somatic movement and understand how to bring a more somatic awareness to your sessions by adapting the movements for those who you work with.

What is Somatic Movement...

Somatic Movement originated from philosopher, writer and educator Thomas Hanna, who questioned what it is like to be human, what it is like to be embodied and to be free. The belief being that change can only occur from the inside - a concept known as Soma - (the whole body as being perceived from within).

The idea of Soma highlights our mind and body are the same when looked at from an internal perspective and our somas can help with self correcting, self regulating and self healing, all of which are beneficial for our health and wellbeing.

Somatic Movement re-educates the nervous system using sensory information to gain greater voluntary control over muscles and the body. When working with slow mindful movements, this can act as a type of neuro-muscular retraining, enhancing proprioception, body awareness and coordination. Somatic movement therefore works directly with the plasticity of the brain to develop proprioception and embodiment, in turn benefitting people with special needs by creating and strengthening neural pathways.
