As naturopaths, healing the gut is our bread and butter. We know that it’s the epicentre of health and disease, that all disease begins in the gut, that the gut drives many complex digestive, neurological, hormonal, skin and autoimmune conditions. In what is now a decade of consistent clinical practice I’ve guided thousands of people to sort their digestives systems — from IBS to SIBO, Inflammatory Bowel Disease: Crohn’s disease & Ulcerative Colitis, parasites, gastritis, ulcers, GORD/GERD, bowel c@ncer recovery, you name it.
Here’s what I’ve learnt about healing your gut:
1. You can’t heal the gut when your nervous system is in overdrive. The gut contains more neurons than the brain — start working on your nervous system yesterday.
2. Invest in microbiome testing. Testing and not guessing will save you so much time & money in the long run. When colonoscopies, gastroscopies and CT scans are all clear — it’s usually the microbiome.
3. IBS is a lazy diagnosis. Dig deeper.
4. Fads come and go — superfoods, restrictive diets, wellness trends. The foundations of true health stay the same: whole foods, appropriate movement, stress management, sleep, rest, purpose, connection and community.
5. Unwarranted parasite cleanses often do more harm than good (refer to point 2)
6. CHEW YOUR FOOD
7. No coffee on an empty stomach. The amount of people who’s diarrhoea has completely disappeared, or they’ve realised just how constipated they truly are (coffee is a laxative…) after implementing this simple step never ceases to amaze me.
