Nafsiyat Intercultural Therapy Centre

Nafsiyat Intercultural Therapy Centre Nafsiyat is a charity that provides Intercultural psychotherapy and counselling for people from dive

Our vision is to see all mental health services become sensitive to and appropriate for the diverse cultural, racial, ethnic population who live in the UK. To that end, we offer inter-cultural psychotherapy, an innovative form of individual and group therapy, free to Black, Asian, minority, ethnic and refugee (BAMER) clients. Our work has led to major improvements in services for people with complex needs and set the standards for UK practice. Nafsiyat has been providing intercultural therapy and counselling for over 30 years. In 1983, leading Indian psychotherapist Jafar Kareem founded the charity. Jafar recognised that many from BAMER communities with acute mental health problems, struggled to access appropriate help. Nafsiyat pioneered an accessible form of multi-disciplinary psychotherapy and remains the leading intercultural centre offering psychotherapy to these communities in London. We began in Islington and our practice has now grown to offer support to clients from Camden, Haringey and Enfield.

This past Friday, we celebrated our annual staff party, a great time to acknowledge and appreciate the incredible efforts of our staff and Trustees over the past year.

It was a fantastic evening filled with good food, camaraderie, and a shared sense of purpose. These gatherings are not just about having a great time together; they are a heartfelt thank you to each team member. Without the dedication and hard work of our staff, Nafsiyat wouldn't be able to deliver the impactful intercultural therapy services that we do.

The evening was a reminder of the strength we have as a team, and the joy we find in our shared mission. A huge thank you to everyone who joined us for the celebration. Your presence made the evening all the more special.

Thank you all for being part of Nafsiyat and for all that you do.

Today we'd like to share the story of Ben, whose journey through therapy at Nafsiyat offers a glimpse into the profound impact of intercultural understanding and support.

📍 Ben, a man in his late forties with Mediterranean roots, found himself at a crossroads when the stress of daily life began to erode his health and work. Despite his hardworking nature, Ben faced a struggle that was invisible but deeply felt. It was a struggle shaped by the cultural tapestry of his upbringing and the silent expectations of gender roles within his family.

⚖️ Turning to Nafsiyat for help marked Ben's first step into the world of therapy, prompted by a referral from his GP. As a full-time worker in a manual job, a husband, and a father, Ben's life was a balancing act that had started to teeter.

🧭 A pivotal moment came during the ninth session. It was a turning point where trust deepened, and Ben shared more of his inner world, allowing for a shift in perspective. This breakthrough led to a series of realisations for Ben. He began to recognise the shades of grey in situations he had once seen in stark black and white. With guidance, he learned to manage his emotions and articulate his needs more clearly, carving out a space for his own wellbeing amidst the family dynamics.

The intercultural approach of Nafsiyat was instrumental in this transformation. It allowed Ben to examine and challenge the cultural expectations that had silently dictated his life. Viewing these norms from the fresh perspective of a therapist with a different cultural background, Ben could question and redefine what they meant for him.

❔ We hope you've found Ben's story enlightening. How do you see the role of therapy in such transformative journeys?

👍 Your support is invaluable – please like and share to help us reach those in need of our services.

Nafsiyat stands firmly against racial disparities in all aspects of healthcare.

The latest MBRRACE-UK report reveals extreme ethnic inequalities in perinatal care, with a significantly higher risk of stillbirth and neonatal death for Black and Asian infants.

In the same way we must address mental healthcare disparities between ethnic groups, we must address these disparities with urgency and advocate for an equitable healthcare system for all mothers and babies.

Here at Nafsiyat, we are proud of the impact our work has.

This New Year, we wanted to highlight an anonymised letter we received praising the work of one of our therapists.

This heartfelt feedback truly underscores the importance of our work at Nafsiyat. It highlights the critical need for our services, especially for clients from global majority backgrounds seeking therapy in their native language and a therapeutic process that respects their cultural identity. Without Nafsiyat, this vital support would be absent, leaving a significant void in culturally sensitive mental health care.
