🧐 Confused about Live-In vs. Home Care? 🏡

When the time comes to look for support for a loved one, the options can feel overwhelming, so we’ve broken down the differences between Live-In Care and Home Care.

Live-In Care means:
• A dedicated carer lives in your home, providing a continuous 24/7 presence for support and peace of mind.
• It is ideal for those with complex needs, requiring consistent night-time support, or needing continuous companionship.
• This offers high consistency with care provided by a small, dedicated team who become familiar with routines.

Home Care:
• Involves a carer visiting for scheduled blocks of time (e.g., 30 minutes or an hour) to help with specific tasks.
• It is often suited for lower-level needs, such as assistance with getting dressed, medication prompting, or light household tasks.
• This typically involves a wider team of carers providing intermittent, scheduled support.

What this essentially means is that Live-In Care is for round-the-clock support, while Home Care is for flexible, scheduled help to maintain independence. Want to find out more? Read our full blog post here 👉 https://bit.ly/3Kxh1SC

🎄 Making Christmas Day Dementia-Friendly 🎅

Christmas Day is a time for joy, but the extra noise, guests, and change in routine can sometimes be overwhelming for someone living with dementia. Making a few simple adaptations can ensure the day is enjoyable for everyone:

1️⃣ Plan ahead
2️⃣ Prepare guests
3️⃣ Offer smaller portions and be mindful that alcohol may increase disorientation
4️⃣ Avoid overstimulation with a designated quiet room
5️⃣ Keep to routine
6️⃣ Include the person and simplify communication
7️⃣ Take time for yourself
8️⃣ Have a practice run
9️⃣ Encourage fresh air
🔟 Manage sleep

Keeping things simple and familiar is key to a happy, inclusive Christmas. For more helpful tips for the festive season, visit the Dementia UK website here: https://bit.ly/43UWXA8

🕊️ National Grief Awareness Week 2025 🕊️

The theme this year is ‘Growing with Grief’, which reminds us that grief changes us, and that we grow into someone new, shaped by love, memories, and resilience.

This growth doesn't erase the pain, but it allows hope to return. You may find yourself more present, compassionate, and aware of what truly matters.

🎄 Making Christmas Special for Loved Ones with Dementia 🎁

The festive season can be overwhelming for people living with dementia, but with a little planning, you can create moments of joy and connection. Dementia UK suggests focusing on simple, familiar, and meaningful activities.

Here are 3 ideas to bring festive cheer:

🎶 Play familiar Christmas carols and songs from their past. Music is incredibly powerful and can trigger positive memories and a sense of calm. You can have a quiet sing-a-long or just enjoy as background music.

🎨 Engage with easy, enjoyable crafty tasks. Try decorating biscuits, making a simple paper chain, or putting one or two familiar ornaments on the tree.

🖼️ Find ways for them to still participate in traditions they love, even if simplified. If they loved cooking, let them stir a mixture. If they sent cards, let them write their name on a stack you've pre-addressed.

🌧️ Understanding Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) 🌧️

As the days get shorter, many of us feel a dip in mood or energy. For some, this can be a type of depression called Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). It's estimated that around 1 in 15 people in the UK experience some form of SAD each year.

Signs to watch for:
• Persistent low mood or feelings of despair.
• Loss of interest or pleasure in normal activities.
• Lethargy and feeling constantly sleepy during the day.
• Sleeping for longer than usual and struggling to wake up.
• Carbohydrate cravings and weight gain.
• Difficulty concentrating.

💡 What helps? Get outside daily, maximise light exposure, exercise, and ask your GP about Light Therapy or Vitamin D supplements.

Don't suffer in silence, if you're struggling to cope, reach out for professional support.

Is your hearing changing? 👂

Around 12 million adults in the UK are affected by hearing loss. It often happens gradually, meaning you might not notice the changes right away.

Are you experiencing these signs?

- Need the TV volume much louder than before.
- Struggle to hear clearly when talking on the phone.
- Find it hard to follow conversations, especially in noisy crowds.
- Have to constantly concentrate hard to hear, often needing people to repeat themselves.

If you've noticed any changes The Royal Institute for Deaf People (RNID) offers a quick and easy online hearing check. Try the free test here ➡️ https://bit.ly/2T08NHx

Choosing Live-in Care?

Selecting the right live-in care company is a huge decision. You should be sure to check these vital points for your chosen care company:

1. Experience and reputation
2. Training and qualifications
3. Carer matching
4. Flexibility of care
5. Community involvement
6. Face to face contact.

Peace of mind comes from choosing the right provider.

At PillarCare, we believe care is about more than services. It is about dignity, respect, and continuity of life at home. By asking the right questions and choosing a provider who values openness and reliability, you can make a confident decision that gives your loved one the best quality of life.

Stay healthy and warm this winter 🧣❄️

The cold weather can be tough, especially for older people. Follow these top tips from Age UK to look after yourself:

🚶 Keep moving. Even light, regular activity like walking around or chair-based exercises helps you stay warm and maintain strength. Try not to sit still for more than an hour at a time, if you are able.

🍲 Eat well - hot meals and drinks are key. Aim for at least one hot meal and plenty of hot drinks throughout the day.

💉 Make sure you get your flu and COVID-19 booster vaccinations.

🌡️ Heat your main room to at least 21°C and your bedroom to at least 18°C. Wear layers, even indoors, and keep your bedroom window closed at night.
