Last week the Gong team (along with Cherish PR, a Wilful Group company and the rest of The Wilful Group) celebrated our very first WOW Day (We Own Wilful). Although it was a rainy start, we all trapsed off to Nomadic Dinners to enjoy an afternoon of foraging, company updates and innovative team bonding activities.

Set against the backdrop of the stunning woods, we enjoyed an interesting talk and foraging session amongst the beautiful oak trees as we learnt lots about sorrel, nettles, and a variety of mushrooms. As well as being encouraged to taste most of the above as part of the experience (minus the mushrooms).

After the ‘hard’ work was finished, the team all sat down to a delicious dinner consisting of mackerel, lamb cutlets and Eaton mess (and of course not forgetting the magnums of rose).

Each WOW Day is aligned to a season (this was of course Summer) and we are all really looking forward to finding out what Autumn’s has in store.

We attended another great event yesterday by Africa in partnership with Charles Russell Speechlys. It was an interesting discussion mediated by Keir Gordon (Charles Russell Speechlys), between Ola Oyetayo (Verto FX), Robert Schumann (Cassava Technologies), Geoffrey White (Agility Africa), and Guy Willner (Helios) on bridging the divide and accelerating investment into African centres. They talked about the importance of energy, governance, and trained workforce.

reminds us of the urgent need to reduce carbon emissions.

💡 The road to net zero is a complex journey, and that's where our client, Puro.earth comes in. As the leading crediting platform for engineered carbon removals, its mission is to mobilise the economy to reward carbon net negative emissions.

🌱 Puro.earth has already made headlines by supporting Microsoft's goal to be carbon negative by 2030 and remove all historical emissions by 2050. But its focus is as much on emissions reductions as it is removals. "Carbon removal is not a ‘get out of jail’ card, it is a tool that motivates companies to explore the more economical emission reduction strategies that need to happen," says Marianne Tikkanen, Co-founder and Head of Carbon Crediting at Puro.earth.

🤝 Check out Puro.earth's ebook to understand more about how carbon removals can move us to net zero emissions faster. https://lnkd.in/etBhjYUp

Transitioning to a net-zero emissions economy is crucial to mitigating the worst effects of climate change. Download the Puro.earth ebook to learn how to achieve net-negative economy with carbon removal

Environmental organisation Plastic Planet has launched an educational content hub listing over 100 materials that do not contain plastic called to help global creatives and innovators identify sustainable alternatives to fossil fuel derived building materials.

In an article about this new content hub, design magazine, Deezen has featured one of our favourite fossil-free plastic alternative producers, Notpla – the EarthShot Prize winning seaweed packaging company – in an article about sustainable design and development featuring the digital platform.

co-founder Sian Sutherland told Deezen, "nutrient-based" materials such as Notpla's edible seaweed packaging or Mirum plant leather, which can return to the earth as nutrients, are just some of the options for functional Earth-friendly packaging.

"That is going to be the future of materials," Sutherland said, "for everything from the houses we live in and the fabric we wear, to the products we buy and the packaging in which they're sold."

Environmental organisation A Plastic Planet has launched an online platform to help architects and designers source plastic-free materials for their projects and avoid the "minefield of misinformation" around more sustainable alternatives.

This month saw the launch of Giving to Amplify Earth Action (GAEA), a new global initiative spearheaded by the World Economic Forum that will help release the $3 trillion needed annually to restore biodiversity and reach net zero by 2050. WEF describes current funding as ‘slow and inadequate’ with a new approach required to unlock capital. GAEA, which is backed by around 45 partners such as the Wellcome Trust, IKEA Foundation and Capital for Climate, is designed to boost public, private and philanthropic partnerships (PPPP) new and current, with philanthropy seen as the force needed to accelerate solutions to heal Earth’s systems.

These stats from the WEF press release stood out: Philanthropic financing for climate mitigation represents less than 2% of total philanthropic giving, estimated at $810 billion in 2021.

Over the next 12 months, it’ll be interesting to see which climate and nature solutions are identified by leaders as worthy recipients of catalytic PPPP interventions.
