How does a father’s age influence the genes passed on to the next generation? 🧬

Researchers from the Wellcome Sanger Institute, working with TwinsUK participants, have used a new ultra-accurate DNA sequencing method to study how genetic changes occur in s***m as men age.

The study found that while most genetic changes are harmless, certain rare mutations can increase with age, helping scientists understand how these changes may contribute to health and development.

Findings like these help researchers build a clearer picture of how ageing and genetics interact, and could one day inform new approaches to disease prevention and reproductive health.

A huge thank you to all our amazing TwinsUK members who continue to make this kind of research possible 💙

A simple cheek swab could help scientists detect cancer before it develops.

In a new study published in Nature, researchers from the Wellcome Sanger Institute, working with data and samples from more than 1,000 TwinsUK participants, refined a DNA sequencing tool called NanoSeq to detect hidden mutations in healthy tissue.

These findings offer powerful insight into how ageing and lifestyle factors like smoking and alcohol consumption can influence genetic changes, paving the way for earlier detection and prevention of disease.

A huge thank you to all our amazing twins who made this research possible!
