Hoarding might be addictive, but change your mindset
and decluttering is too. Different sides of the same coin

Summer's here. And this week is looking to be a scorcher. It's time to do a shed declutter. Mainly because it's lockdown and we need to socially distance and it's one way I can help my clients at the moment. It's outdoors, not usually too sentimental and it's often just a case of re-organising, not necessarily letting go. The shed more than anywhere needs order. Separate the following:

gardening tools

chemicals (if you use them) and consumables

stuff you use regularly

stuff you use occasionally

summer stuff (bbq, seat cushions, parasol)

Sheds can be full but they have to be organised. You want to be able to grab and go. Share your shed pics below.

"English is a noun based language, somehow appropriate to a culture so obsessed with things."

~ from Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer.
Such a calming book.
I bought it second hand and will pass it on afterwards.

Why, how, what and where to start decluttering.
Join me virtually at 5.30 on Thursday when I'll answer all these questions and provide some tips on where to get rid of your stuff, including during lockdown, that doesn't involved chucking it straight in the bin. Register for a free ticket here:

I want to talk a bit about the process of decluttering. Part of the process is separating things you want to let go of from things you want to keep. Here's a pile of sorted things a client had ready for me one session. What do the yoga blocks and packets of sugar say about this decluttering session?

I'm a declutterer, did I mention that yet? I try to keep things positive but this is my 'why', the reason I do what I do.

We have too much of it, much of it is toxic, we don't share it very well – and it's not even making us happy. But it doesn't have to be this way! Together, we can write a new Story of Stuff and build a healthier, happier future. Join me in taking action with The Story of Stuff Project.

Why is decluttering good for the planet? What do they even have in common? Well, I guess I’m still learning, but what I do know is that since I left my day job I only do things that I enjoy and that align with my values and that has to be good for the planet for a start, because, until we start to love ourselves there’s no way we can start to love our environment and the world we live in. Are you using this time to clear out some stuff but then getting to the stage of getting rid of it and realise there's nowhere to take it? The HWRCs (Household Waste and Recycling Centres), aka the dumps, are closed, as are charity shops.
Here are a couple of ideas on what to do with it, but please, whatever you do, don't put it in the bin. Even socks with holes can be recycled.
- For clothes: www.thrift.plus will send you a bag, even in lockdown, to fill with better quality clothes, sell them for you and donate some proceeds to charity.
- For books, CDs and DVDs, www.webuybooks.co.uk will offer you cash for your books and you can still send them off.
- For everything else, you may have the time right now to separate all the unwanted stuff so it's ready for dealing with when lockdown is over. Put it in boxes rather than bags because it'll look neater in the corner if you do have to keep looking at it. And let me know, I can come and collect when it's safer to do so and will promise not to throw anything into landfill before checking first if I can resell, recycle or repurpose it.

Footnote: big shout out to Joe at Thrift Plus who just got funding on Dragon's Den.

Anyone else struggling with too much time? Were you also complaining about not having enough time in the new year? I'm determined to stay positive about this. Having a lot of time is a good thing. Having more space (by decluttering of course) is an even better thing. Combining the two is where I'm going with this. I have a lot of time for procrastination but I'm learning that not doing anything (for a while) is great, as long as I'm productive too. After the success of the linen cupboard (although I'm calling it an airing cupboard now there's space for some air in there) I've hit a bit of a wall.

In these days of corona, I have no client contact - no face to face work, and it's a struggle, I miss it. My mum, who's retired but usually busy, said yesterday, 'we're all a bit rudderless, aren't we?' And she's right. So how am I planning my day? There are a few anchors: meditating, pilates, Writer's Hour, tennis, lunch, skipping and dinner, and I keep reminding myself to make the most of all the thinking and reading time corona is allowing me. It's so easy to procrastinate at home. I'm bad enough at the best of times, but now I'm stuck at home all day long, bar the odd visit to the post office (for my online sales posting) and daily dog walk, it's terriible. Suddenly, it's 5pm and I'm waiting til 6 so I can have a cheeky gee&tee, while my sensible mum usually just has tea.

So, if you're like me and looking for some space and clarity to get some real work done, perhaps you need some space and clarity in your home office, aka kitchen table, sofa, bed, whatever. I've taken over the living room as my temporary desk, pilates studio, online sales warehouse and I can just see so many things. If I put them all away, I'd have more clarity to get on with this social media post.

I'm a firm believer in everything having its place. So put away everything you can see on your makeshift (or real) desk and see if you get more clarity.

Hit me with your office decluttering questions, I'm a declutter and I'm here to help.
