Sun Xikun wrote in his Bagua book:
- if the Qi blood is full and flourishing, the spirit will also be sufficient.
- if the spirit does not leave the Qi blood, the five organs and six viscera essence will fully pe*****te-
- Qi is the commander of the blood, blood is the mother of the Qi,
- Qi stimulates blood to move, blood leaves the track for the Qi to circulate,
- internally it pe*****tes the organs and viscera, externally it pe*****tes the limbs,
- the Qi blood must be guided by the mind (yi),
- if the mind moves the Qi moves, if the mind becomes chaotic the Qi becomes chaotic,
- anger causes the Qi to be worn away,
- fear causes the Qi to descend,
- thought causes the Qi to knot,
- surprise causes the Qi to scatter,
- when the mind is still the spirit is placid,
- when the spirit is placid the heart is still,
- then the heart will be vast and spirit placid,
- therefore in the practice of Baguazhang the mind must always be still, heart must be still, spirit must be still.
- this is the principle which enables the mind to lead and the Qi to become commander.
Let's not speculate today, let's just talk about what this means and doesn't mean:
1: Qi blood: a medical concept which refers to the Qi as the subtle Yang quality within blood. It is a combination of pre heaven Qi, essence Qi of grains and water (nutritional substance from food), and clear Qi from breathing, it is not alchemical Qi or lower Dantian Qi. It is partially the product of Jing, but ot in the alchemical sense, in the medical sense. Totally different subjects.
2: Sun holds that the mind is involved in activity of Qi blood,
3: sudden emotional changes alter Qi blood dynamics,
4: the mind leads the Qi in this case means that we must focus and calm the mind, not that we direct Qi through the meridians with the intention.
5: if we maintain a calm mind when we practice, the Qi will travel in the blood more efficiently and nourish the organs and arrive at the end of the limbs.
If we want to find out what the early generation of practitioners really believed we have to read their writings. Often what we uncover will show that some of our preconceived notions about how the arts work are not related to their way of thinking.
Can you obtain certain intenral alchemy style benefits from martial arts? Sure, especially if you already practice internal alchemy, but this is downstream from the main idea of Qi in martial arts which is about mobility as a result of the use the mind to guide and facilitate movement and the full pe*******on of blood circulation throughout the entire body.
