We all do it.

Delude ourselves that we will be happy once we attain some specific thing, which will magically make our problems disappear and give us a positive personality transplant.

The problem is not having goals. Goals are good. The problem is attaching your happiness to those goals.

We are searching for happiness in the wrong places.

Real happiness - rather than the brief thrill of reaching a fitness or financial or follower goal - is a process not a destination, internal not external.

You might reach that goal, and you’ll feel happy for a little bit. Lovely. But then it slips away. You always reset to where you were.

Get off the treadmill.

Brain sending cravings urging you to eat it whenever you see it?

You are not alone.

The compulsion to binge on that chocolate can make you feel completely out of control.

But a binge always ends the same way: lethargy, bloating, regret and self loathing.

When the cravings start, you need to tell your brain a new message to replace the old binge message. Repeat it like a mantra. Deciding not to binge might feel weird and uncomfortable for a couple weeks.

But it will be worth it because you will retrain your brain that you do not binge on chocolate and it will stop sending the cravings.

Imagine that. No willpower needed.

Our brains have an inbuilt negative bias which means we tend to fixate on the negative things that happen, to the exclusion of the positive (it’s an evolution thing: we had to be more aware of the danger because there were literally tigers around every corner).

Once you know this, you can take steps to fight it: train your brain to understand that the tigers are no longer there.

The technique in my post is a simple and excellent way of retraining your brain to notice and give attention to the positive things that happen to you.

It will get you into the habit of appreciating the good things in your day and when you start to notice those good things automatically throughout the day, you’ll feel happier.

A notebook full of happy memories is also a great mood boost when things haven’t gone brilliantly.

Time to stop making self deprecating remarks about your appearance. Even the ones masquerading as jokes.

It creates self critical patterns of thought which become normalised so it becomes normal to criticise ourselves and focus on the things we feel are ugly about our appearance.

It also makes other people feel uncomfortable: they don’t know what to say!

And while we’re here, stop deflecting compliments with self-deprecating remarks (you know the ones: “ No, I look terrible” “No, it’s the ugliest dress ever worn”, ‘No, it’s nothing, I’m nothing” etc etc. This is also rude and makes the compliment-giver feel uncomfortable.

Accept compliments. Practice saying in the mirror “thank you, that makes me feel good”.

Break the pattern of self-criticism and boost your self-esteem.

Anxious thoughts can feel overwhelming. Like your mind is racing uncontrollably screaming out the worst possible scenarios even when they are unlikely (or near impossible) to happen.

Sometimes your brain takes a normal thought (“I must drive carefully on this motorway”) and changes it into something anxious (“I could move the steering wheel an inch and crash the car right now”).

It’s natural to try to fight them because you want so badly for them to stop.

But this makes it worse.

Trying to make the thoughts stop is futile, exhausting and gives them more power.

It’s better to simply accept them, let them be, let them drone on in the background whilst you get on with life.

I suggest my clients think of anxious thoughts like graffiti on the wall (you wouldn’t obey the graffiti message; you wouldn’t treat it as a fact).

Because the more you passively let the thoughts be, the quieter they will become. So stop fighting.

Humans are hardwired to be a bit glass half empty (it’s an evolution thing; we are programmed to look for danger and problems which means we often focus on the stuff which isn’t going our way, rather than the stuff that is).

But you can train your brain to reframe how it sees things and create a new habit of noticing and giving your attention to the many many things that do go well.

Just do these two simple exercises morning and night, lying in bed, and it will change your general outlook to a more positive one in just a week or two.

You simply imagine the perfect coat. See it in your mind.

Make it the perfect design for you, fitting perfectly.

Now imagine that this coat has very special properties: strong yet flexible, protective yet comfortable, light yet with the resilience of rubber so you can shrug off any negativity, irritation, difficulty, disappointment. 

You are the designer of this suit, so you can add anything you want into the design: 

A pocket of confidence? 
A lining of energy? 
A button of creativity? 

Whatever it is you personally need, put it in now. 

When you have a tricky situation which makes you feel insecure, imagine slipping on this coat. Imagine feeling an inner sense of outer protection. You feel strong, tough, resilient and positive.  

Foolish words will not upset you. Everything just bounces off you.
