Your GP appointment is 10 minutes. Your child’s issues don’t fit in 10 minutes.
This isn’t a criticism of GPs. They’re stretched. They’re brilliant. But 10 minutes is 10 minutes.

Now imagine 45 minutes with a consultant paediatrician.

45 minutes to take a full medical history.
45 minutes to do a comprehensive physical exam.
45 minutes to discuss development, behaviour, sleep, diet, emotional wellbeing.
45 minutes to actually listen.

That’s what a Bright Futures initial consultation looks like.

No rushing. No “one issue per appointment.” No feeling like you’re wasting anyone’s time.

Your child’s health story is complex. It deserves more than a chapter summary.

Your child is tired, irritable, and can’t concentrate. The teacher says it’s behavioural. What if it’s nutritional?
Before you accept a label, rule out the basics.

Iron deficiency alone can cause:
• Fatigue and low energy
• Poor concentration
• Irritability and mood changes
• Restless sleep
• Frequent infections

And iron is just one piece. Low vitamin D, B12 deficiency, and thyroid imbalances all mimic behavioural problems.

A simple blood test can reveal what’s actually going on inside your child’s body — before assumptions are made about what’s going on inside their head.

At Bright Futures Health, routine laboratory work is part of our screening programme. Because every child deserves a diagnosis that starts with evidence, not guesswork.

You’ve said “is this normal?” about your child 437 times this year. You’ve Googled it 436 of those times.
Is it normal that they’re not talking yet?
Is it normal that they won’t eat anything green?
Is it normal that they’re exhausted every afternoon?
Is it normal that they’re so anxious about school?

Every parent carries these questions. Very few get proper answers.

A well-child visit isn’t just a physical exam. It’s 45 minutes with a consultant paediatrician who will listen to every single one of those questions.

You’ve said “is this normal?” about your child 437 times this year. You’ve Googled it 436 of those times.
Developmental concerns. Behavioural quirks. Sleep issues. Food battles. Emotional regulation. Growth patterns.

Some things ARE perfectly normal. Some things need support. The only way to know the difference is to have your child properly assessed.

Your instincts are good. Now let’s give them data.

He worked in one of the UK’s most digitally advanced hospitals. Then he turned his attention to your child.
Dr Martin Gray is a consultant in paediatrics and paediatric critical care.

He led a team of 8 consultant intensivists at St George’s Hospital. He was Chief Clinical Information Officer, making St George’s the second hospital in the UK to achieve the HIMSS EMRAM Stage 6 award for digital maturity.

He completed research at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto and was an Associate Professor at McMaster University.

But his most important insight came from a simple observation: in North America, children receive regular health surveillance as standard. In the UK, they don’t.

Dr Gray co-founded Bright Futures Health to close that gap. His approach combines clinical excellence with digital innovation — ensuring every child’s health journey is tracked, monitored, and optimised.

Prevention isn’t a luxury. It’s a system. And Dr Gray is building it.

She’s cared for the sickest children in the world’s best hospitals. Now she wants to stop them getting sick in the first place.
Dr Margarita Burmester has spent 30+ years in paediatrics.

She trained at St Thomas’ Hospital, London. She worked at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto. She was a consultant at Boston Children’s Hospital, Harvard.

She’s led paediatric intensive care at the Royal Brompton Hospital since 2002.

And after decades of treating critically ill children, she had a revelation: so much of what she was seeing could have been caught earlier.

That’s why she co-founded Bright Futures Health — to bring the proactive screening model she experienced in North America to families in London.

Because the best treatment is the one you never need.

Awarded International Paediatrician of the Year, Dr Burmester is proof that world-class care starts with prevention.

You think your child is fully vaccinated. Are you sure?
Here’s a scenario we see regularly:

Parents bring their child in for a well-child visit. They’re confident their immunisations are up to date. Then we review the records.

Missed boosters. Incomplete courses. Vaccines available privately that weren’t offered on the NHS schedule.

The chickenpox vaccine, for example, is routine in over 40 countries. It's only now in 2026 that it has become part of the UK schedule.

A Bright Futures immunisation review will:
• Audit your child’s full vaccination history
• Identify any gaps or missed doses
• Discuss additional vaccines available
• Update records and create a plan

Bring whatever records you have. We’ll do the rest.

Protection shouldn’t be left to chance.

Your child has never had a blood test. Here’s why that should worry you.
Iron deficiency affects up to 1 in 4 toddlers in the UK. Vitamin D deficiency is rampant in London’s children. Low B12. Elevated cholesterol. Undiagnosed thyroid issues.

None of these conditions show obvious symptoms in the early stages. All of them affect your child’s energy, growth, concentration, and long-term health.

Routine blood work at key stages of childhood can screen for:
• Full blood count and iron levels
• Vitamin D and B12
• Liver and kidney function
• Cholesterol and lipid panel
• Thyroid function (TSH)
• Diabetes markers (fasting glucose, HbA1c)

This isn’t excessive. This is standard care in countries with comprehensive child health programmes.

Your child deserves a baseline. Not a best guess.

A 6-month-old and a 16-year-old walk into a clinic. They need completely different things.
Obvious, right? Yet most health systems treat children’s check-ups as one-size-fits-all.

The Bright Futures programme splits childhood into four distinct stages, each with tailored assessments:

👶 INFANTS (birth–1 year): Growth tracking, feeding support, early developmental markers

🚶 TODDLERS (1–3 years): Language development, behavioural screening, nutritional assessment

🎨 PRESCHOOLERS (3–5 years): School readiness, vision and hearing, social-emotional development

📚 SCHOOL-AGE & ADOLESCENTS (5–18 years): Mental health screening, puberty support, lifestyle assessment

Every stage has specific red flags. Every stage has specific opportunities. Miss the window, and catching up gets harder.

Which stage is your child in?

Your child isn’t sick. That’s exactly when they should see a paediatrician.
A well-child visit isn’t about illness. It’s about prevention.

Think of it like a service for your car — except infinitely more important. You don’t wait for the engine to fail before you check the oil.

During a Bright Futures well-child appointment, your paediatrician will:
• Take a comprehensive age-appropriate medical history
• Conduct a full physical examination
• Review developmental milestones
• Discuss behavioural and emotional wellbeing
• Check immunisation status
• Order routine blood work if needed

All in 45 minutes. With a consultant paediatrician who knows your child.

This is what standard care looks like in much of the developed world. It’s time London families had access to it too.

Stop Googling your child’s symptoms at 2am. There’s a better way.
We’ve all been there. The midnight scroll. The rabbit hole of “is this normal?”

But here’s the thing: Dr Google doesn’t know your child. A paediatrician who sees your child regularly does.

The American Academy of Pediatrics designed the Bright Futures programme specifically to replace guesswork with structured, age-appropriate health assessments from birth to 18.

That means:
• Developmental milestones tracked properly
• Behavioural concerns caught early
• Physical health monitored consistently

Not reactively. Proactively.

The difference between “wait and see” and “screen and support” is everything.

Your child had their last proper health check at age 2. They’re now 7.
Here’s what most London parents don’t realise:

After the initial NHS checks in the first couple of years, routine well-child screening essentially stops. No regular developmental reviews. No scheduled blood work. No proactive monitoring.

In North America and Northern Europe, children receive structured health assessments at every stage of development — not just when something goes wrong.

This isn’t about panic. It’s about a gap that exists in the UK system. And once you see it, you can’t unsee it.

This is Post 1 of 20 in our series: THE HEALTH CHECKS YOUR CHILD DESERVES. Follow along as we break down what proactive paediatric care actually looks like — and why it matters.
