Well done to the BBC in exposing the terrible experiences of rail workers in the front line and highlighting the fact that violent assaults against staff and police officers on the train network are at a four-year high.

A shocking 4,088 attacks were recorded at railway stations across England, Scotland and Wales last year. Southeastern had the most reports of violence, with 438 incidents in 2023.

Railway workers and police staff should not have to face violence and assaults at work, and employers should be challenged to do more to protect their employees. That includes carrying out adequate risk assessments and acting on them.

Adequate staffing levels are also important in making rail workplaces safer.

Rail workers say they are spat at, punched and sworn at as figures suggest abuse has increased.
