The Shala

The Shala Yoga Classes, Workshops and Yoga Teacher Training | Retreat Days | Livestreamed and In Studio | A sa

The Shala was founded by Gingi Lee in 1997, as one of London's first dedicated yoga centres. In 2014, the Shala expanded and took over a newly refurbished space in a Victorian warehouse in West Norwood, on the fringes of West Dulwich. And in 2016, it developed a well respected teacher training programme. The beautiful purpose-built new centre incorporates three light-filled studios, a therapy room, reception, changing facilities and a small coffee bar for post-practice coffee. There daily classes encompassing a range styles including ashtanga, vinyasa flow, Mysore self practice, yin and restorative and Jivamukti yoga. The centre is just minutes from West Norwood overground station and is easily accessible from South London's surrounding neighbourhoods including Clapham, Balham, Brixton, Tulse Hill, Herne Hill, Dulwich, Crystal Palace, Forest Hill and Croydon. There are direct train links from Victoria and London Bridge, various buses and cycle racks and free parking nearby. The space is a sanctuary, peaceful, but vibrant and always warm and welcoming. A dedicated yoga space in which to enhance and develop physical, emotional and spiritual wellbeing. A place to roll out your mat, be part of a community, share, heal and grow. Our teachers all share a deep love and respect for yoga and have a passion for sharing their knowledge and for training a new generation of teachers. Shala classes place an emphasis on encouraging students to develop an individual practice. Our ethos will always be centred around forming a close personal touch on all that we do. Being independent, sharing the love of the practices, and having a positive connection with like-minded people. The centre is also a hub for new life with classes for pregnant women, mother & baby, kids yoga, and teens yoga and a range of workshops from Aerial Yoga to Sound Baths and Breath Work.

A gentle reminder of what really matters 🤍

Movement isn’t about intensity or perfection. It’s about consistency, care, and showing up for your body in a way that supports you for life.

Inspired by one of our student’s mother-in-law, still moving, still showing up, still choosing her body every day at 100 years old.

Longevity is built in the small, daily moments.

How are you moving for your future self? ✨

Spring is a time of renewal, growth, and rising energy.

In this Yin Workshop with Kate Towers, we’ll explore the Wood Element, the energy of spring in Traditional Chinese Medicine. Like bamboo and willow trees, the Wood element reminds us how to stay rooted while remaining flexible, growing upward while staying deeply connected to our foundations.

Through restorative yin yoga, pranayama, Qi Gong, and yoga nidra, this seasonal practice will focus on supporting the Liver and Gallbladder, helping the body release, reset, and move into spring with balance and clarity.

A gentle invitation to slow down, reconnect with your roots, and welcome the energy of a new season.

Some evenings ask nothing of you except to arrive. 🕯️

This two-hour workshop with Emma is an exploration of the relationship between the physical body and the subtle breath.

Long-held Yin asana, pranayama, and internal mudras guide you inward through three layers of attention, until you land, quietly, in the feeling of your own heart.

No striving. No performance. Just breath, stillness, and the simple mystery of being here.

All levels welcome. Book via the link in bio.

What gives life meaning from a yogic perspective?

Join Daniel Simpson to examine the cycles of cause and effect that shape our lives, and how
they relate to the question of purpose.

This interactive online session of the Yoga Philosophy Club offers space for discussion,
reflection, and inquiry around what we've inherited and who we're becoming.

Among other topics, we will consider:
• How do we define dharma and karma in contemporary terms?
• What gives us purpose? How free are we to make our own choices?
• How much of life is shaped by factors beyond our control?
• What distinguishes things we can change from those we can’t?
• Does it help to prioritise values instead of objectives?

These 21 students have committed months to our Level 1 training - long days of study, genuine self-enquiry, and a level of dedication that quietly transformed them. And this weekend they will be sharing yoga with the Vahni/Shala community as part of their course.

Our Shala School trainees lead their graduating community weekend on 14–16 March, and the range of what's on offer reflects exactly who they are: flows that wake you up, yin that slows you right down, classes for people who've never unrolled a mat and classes for people who've been practising for years.

£5–£15 per class, pick what works for you.

International Women’s day opened this week and we’re carrying that spirit with us this entire month.

We are constantly reminded of the quiet strength of women who show up. Showing up for their practice. For each other. For their communities. For themselves.

Yoga teaches us a simple truth. What you give, you gain. Care becomes community. Support becomes resilience. Presence becomes power.

The world can ask a lot of women. But when women hold space for one another, something powerful happens. We soften, we strengthen, and we rise together.

Today we celebrate the women who practice beside us, teach beside us, and walk this path together.

Happy International Women’s Day 🤍🔥

Something quietly remarkable happened during this year's 200-hour teacher training.

Our trainees - 20 awesome women and one brave man - were asked to bring yoga into their own communities as part of their learning. And they did. One offered classes in a mosque. Another in a Buddhist monastery. Another in a Hindu temple.

Nobody was asked to leave their beliefs at the door. Nobody had to.

This is what yoga is supposed to be. Non dogmatic. Open to all.

Our community weekend (14–16 March) marks the graduation moment of this group as they do their final assessments. Drop-in classes across the whole weekend, pay what you can between £5–£15.

Come as you are. Whoever that is.
