✨UK Malnutrition Awareness Week 2025✨

📅 17–21 November 2025

We’re getting ready for UK Malnutrition Awareness Week (UKMAW) — a national campaign led by the Malnutrition Task Force and BAPEN, raising vital awareness about preventing, identifying, and managing malnutrition across all care settings and within our local communities.

Malnutrition is common, costly and often overlooked — but with the right awareness and early action, it is preventable.

As the BDA London Branch, we’ll be reposting & sharing resources, local activities, and ways you can get involved throughout the week.

✨ How you can take part:

🔸 Share your events, experiences or initiatives
🔸 Run local awareness sessions or training
🔸 Use to join the national conversation
🔸 Tag to be featured

Let’s work together to make malnutrition prevention everyone’s business across London.

🎙️ Student Voices: Clodagh – MSc Dietetics, King’s College London 💙

“For me, the greatest thing about dietetics is seeing how big a role clinical nutrition plays in patient care. Before I started, I thought nutrition was mostly about prevention — but now I see how crucial it is in the hospital setting, helping patients recover when they’re too unwell to eat”.

From food fortification to feeding regimes, dietitians make a real difference every day.👩‍⚕️🥣

A recent BBC report highlighted the rising levels of deprivation across the UK — a reminder that deprivation and health inequalities are deeply connected. But what does this mean for food access?

When income and living standards fall, access to affordable, nutritious food becomes increasingly limited.

🍞7.5 million (11%) of the UK population (as per 2023/24 report) are experiencing food insecurity, and in London, the numbers are rising sharply. Families with children, single parents, and households including disabled adults are among the most affected, revealing how food insecurity mirrors wider social and economic inequalities.

As dietitians, we know that healthy eating isn’t just about choice — it’s about access. Promoting health equity means addressing the structural barriers that make nutritious food harder to reach for many.

At BDA London Branch, we’re committed to raising awareness, supporting local action, and advocating for a food system where everyone can eat well.

🎥✨ A Week in the Life of a Student Dietitian & BDA London Branch Social Media Officer 💙

On Tuesday I has an early start at uni, which included planning upcoming posts and creating educational content for Instagram, including one on cholesterol awareness 🫀

We explored the management of Type I & II Diabetes with guest lecturers from Whittington Hospital and discussed the Broken Plate Report by the Food Foundation 🍽️: a powerful reminder of how diet and inequality are deeply connected.

Wednesday was packed with biochemistry and professional practice sessions, where we talked about electron transport chain, care homes, how dietitians can help improve residents’ health, and how to spot malnutrition 💬

During the lunch break, I had the honour of leading our London Met Nutrition Society’s study skills session. What a fantastic way to reinforce our learning and share tips on how to study effectively 🙌

On Friday, my youngest came down with a fever and cough, so I stayed home to look after my little patient. While he was napping and enjoying his beauty sleep, I finalised the newsletter for the London Met Nutrition Society and shared a few stories for the BDA London Branch 😌

Throughout November, we’ll be focusing on malnutrition awareness, sharing useful information and resources as part of Malnutrition Awareness Week — so make sure to follow along 💙

Feeling so grateful, productive, and inspired today… wishing everyone a lovely weekend ✨

🩺 Let’s talk cholesterol: a modifiable risk factor for heart health❤️

High cholesterol can quietly build up in the arteries, increasing the risk of heart disease and stroke, often without any symptoms.

Some individuals are more affected due to genetic factors, environment, and inequalities in access to care. This highlights the importance of awareness and early action.

The good news? Cholesterol levels are modifiable through small, evidence-based lifestyle changes:

🥣 Eat more fibre
🫒 Choose unsaturated fats
🚶‍♀️ Stay active and check your levels regularly

🩺If unsure about your risks consult your GP❗️

For personalised and evidence-based support with nutrition trust a Registered Dietitian to help you make sustainable changes that protect your heart😌
