One such breakthrough is TAVI (Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation). This minimally invasive procedure replaces a damaged heart valve without open-heart surgery, offering faster recovery and improved outcomes.

TAVI can be life-changing for patients with severe symptomatic aortic stenosis, which is a condition that can be life-threatening. It’s an option for those over 70 or younger patients with a previous valve replacement that’s deteriorating or at higher risk from conventional surgery.

More recently, TAVI has expanded to treat leaky valves, also giving these patients an alternative to traditional surgery.

Looking back, my pregnancy was straightforward but I carried a lot of quiet anxiety with me. I wanted everything to be ok and to know my baby was safe - that meant learning to 'surrender' and trust the process, which didn’t always come easily.

Having an anterior placenta made it harder to recognise what “normal movement” felt like at first but it was comforting to know I could visit the Lindo Wing whenever I needed that extra bit of reassurance.

Knowing I had access to leading obstetricians and neonatal specialists gave me such peace of mind - especially as a first-time mum. I’m especially grateful to Mr Digesu for his warmth and humour and to midwives Debbie and Gabriella for their incredible support both before and after birth.

Choosing the Lindo Wing was, without a doubt, the best decision I could have made for my birth experience.

Lymphoedema is a long-term condition that causes swelling due to a build-up of fluid and other substances. It most commonly affects the arms and legs and can increase the risk of serious infections.

💡 What if you could test your heart for more than your heart rhythm?

We’re trialling a new artificial intelligence (AI) model that can predict high blood pressure and related complications based on results from an electrocardiogram (ECG).

An electrocardiogram is a test that records the electrical activity of your heart, including the rate and rhythm. It’s fast, preventative and our new model could help spot risks earlier and reduce strokes, heart attacks, and other serious conditions.

Professor Fu Siong Ng, consultant cardiologist, will lead on the development of clinical trials at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust and Chelsea and Westminster NHS Foundation Trust this year. He said: “This work continues to show that our AI tool is credible and reliable at predicting important health risks, our trials will help show if patients can benefit significantly from earlier intervention and treatment.”

From the very first antenatal visit, the care felt personal. The midwives remembered me, checked in on my wellbeing, and made me feel emotionally and physically safe.

Pregnancy had its ups and downs, including morning sickness, sciatica, sleepless nights and anxiety. But the team never let me feel alone.

Professor Wladyslaw Gedroyc, consultant radiologist, was part of the team at St Mary’s Hospital who successfully treated Lord Julian Fellowes, the Oscar-winning creator of Downton Abbey, for essential tremor.

He explained: “As a radiologist, I have always been involved in the diagnostic side of patient care. But throughout my career, I’ve also specialised in interventional radiology, constantly striving to develop procedures that harness the strengths of MRI and the ability to carry out minimally invasive procedures.

“MR-guided focused ultrasound – the treatment Lord Fellowes received – is the fulfilment of that goal. It is completely non-invasive, allowing us to achieve what would otherwise require brain surgery, but without needles, scalpels or opening the skull. Yet it produces profound, effective results for patients.”

Reflecting on his career journey, he added: “Before working with focused ultrasound, I led a substantial programme using MRI to guide interventional procedures. During that time, I visited Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, where I encountered an early medical device using focused ultrasound. I immediately saw the enormous therapeutic potential of this technology, and soon became involved in some of the first worldwide work in this field.”
