What do osteopaths do?
Osteopaths will use a wide variety of gentle hands-on techniques that focus on releasing tension, improving mobility and optimising function, together with providing useful health advice and exercise if required.

They will also work with, or refer you to, other healthcare professionals as needed to ensure you receive optimum care. They take the time to understand each patient – your unique combination of symptoms, medical history and lifestyle. This helps to make an accurate diagnosis of the cause of your issue, (not just addressing the site of discomfort), and formulate a treatment plan with you that will achieve the best outcome.

What is cranial sacral osteopathic approach?

Cranial osteopathy is a refined and subtle type of osteopathic treatment that encourages the release of strain and tensions throughout the body.

It is a gentle approach and may be used in a wide range of conditions for people of all ages, from birth to old age.

Cranio sacral osteopathic approach is a way of viewing the body rather than a type of technique and it can be used on every patient. The whole body is involved and improvements are often noted in different areas and different systems than just the symptomatic one.

Are you suffering from Headaches?

Dr John Patten, leading consultant neurologist in the UK suggests that headaches are the most common symptom come across in medicine.

The NHS report that the highest prevalence of tension-type and neck related headaches.

National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) state that over-medicating is a risk factor for chronic headaches.

There are many types and causes of headaches:

Vascular: migraine and cluster headaches

Tension: muscular contraction

Cervicogenic: referred from neck structures

Cranial neuralgia: facial pain: trigeminal neuralgia, temporal mandibular joint/muscular pain (TMJ)

Eye strain and sinus problems can also cause headaches along with dehydration

Pressure: inflammatory: tumour, infection

Psychotic pain: delusional explanation of pain ie “feels like worms crawling”.

There are two major musculoskeletal structures that may contribute to your headache:

- Temporomandibular joint TMJ

- Sub-occipital muscles.

Research demonstrated that a multidisciplinary approach including osteopathy, exercises, correct diet and hydration led to long-term control of musculoskeletal mediated headaches.

BENEFIT OF OSTEOPATHY IN POST-COVID PATIENTS

Osteopathic Treatments may help to recover in post covid patients or long covid symptoms.

Osteopathic Techniques are effective in treating the thoracic and respiratory musculature dysfunction and muscular atrophy caused by intubation.

Osteopathic Treatments may improve neurotransmitters' chemical signalling, which may have an analgesic effect on musculoskeletal pain caused by Long Covid.

Osteopathic Visceral Manipulation of the liver helps relieve the hepatic dysfunction caused by the covid-19 virus and the pharmaceutical treatment related to the infection.

Osteopathic treatment for babies with colic, reflux and other digestive issue may help to relieve

- Increased pressure onto the baby base of the skull., also known as the occiput.

- Stress on the baby gut and diaphragmgut.

- Tensions on the bony and membranous structures of the skull, which may be keeping the baby's nervous system in a constant state of high alert.

Infantile Colic has been described as irritable, compulsive crying or paroxysmal fussing, which often represents frustration amongst parents.

It is a prevalent presentation to paediatric primary healthcare, ranging between 3-40%.

It has critical adverse associations, including maternal depression, shaken-baby syndrome, and early cessation of breastfeeding.

Often, I get asked whether is worthing to take 'colicky baby' to an Osteopath.

My osteopathic rationale of treatment hypotheses that mechanical factors play a role in the causes of colic.

One of the nerves that can be worked on to relieve colic and reflux symptoms is the vagus nerve, which helps manage the functions of the digestive tract, and open up the communication again, relaxing the digestive tract.

My Journey In Osteopathy

Having worked as a Pilates Instructor for more than seven years made me build up a keen interest in the human body. Hence, I needed to 'do something to help people', and I adored science! I must admit, I sort of fell into Osteopathy.

I needed to ace both the art and the science of using my expertise in case history taking and hands-on skills to make a diagnosis and then treat patients!

After I achieved my Master Degree at UCO in London, I began to work in two multidisciplinary clinics, both based in South West London. This is enabling me to significantly increase my experience, particularly in the treatment of acute and chronic pain, headaches, digestives issues, and understanding the connection between musculoskeletal and the visceral system.

These experiences are giving me a significant comprehension of the human body and exceptional hands-on abilities. I am fully qualified in structural, visceral, fascial and cranial Osteopathy. Also, I have experience in working with pregnant women, athletes, children, adults and the elderly.
