“If your child avoids ice cream or cold water… look closer.”
Many parents think sensitivity or funny-looking spots are “just stains” or “normal.”
But these can be early signs of MIH – Molar Incisor Hypomineralisation, a condition where some of your child’s permanent teeth don’t develop strong enamel.
MIH usually affects the first adult molars (the big back teeth that come in at age 6) and sometimes the front incisors.
This enamel forms in the first years of life — so when it forms weaker, the tooth is more fragile from day one.
Common MIH symptoms to look for:
✔ White, yellow or brown patches – these are not stains; they are spots of weaker enamel
✔ Sensitivity to cold or sweet foods – ice cream, cold drinks, or even brushing may be uncomfortable
✔ Teeth that chip easily – even with normal brushing or eating
✔ Cavities that develop quickly – despite good brushing
✔ Rough or uneven enamel – the surface feels “chalky” or flaky
Why this matters
MIH teeth can break down faster because the enamel is softer and more porous.
Children may avoid certain foods, complain of tooth pain, or struggle with brushing — and parents often don’t realise it’s a medical condition, not poor hygiene.
The good news?
MIH can be managed very effectively when spotted early.
We can reduce sensitivity, strengthen enamel, and protect these teeth before they become painful or badly damaged.
👉 If you notice any of these signs, book an MIH check.
Earlier support = fewer problems and a stronger smile.
