Does falling practice erase the fear from your system or does it simply suppress it?

Practice falls might teach you some valuable skills and help convince your conscious mind that you can fall and still be completely safe. The main problem is that these ‘staged falls’ don’t tap into the subconscious mind, which will still keep activating the fear response.

Our treatment reconditions the fear response by tapping directly into the nervous system through a blend of directed applied neuro-emotional psychology techniques that aim to eradicate, as opposed to suppress, the dysfunctional responses related to fear. Find out more!

How does (or doesn’t) the world’s greatest solo climber experience fear?

Neuroscientists scanned Alex Honnold’s brain and couldn’t spot any activity in the fear centre of his brain – the amygdala. But was he born with an underactive amygdala? Or did he burn out his amygdala from overstimulation?

Everybody’s amygdala responds very differently to fear. However, weather it is genetic or acquired through life, this predisposition can be altered. Research has shown that every time we recall a memory, it undergoes reconsolidation, meaning we are able to add new information or a different interpretation to our remembrance, even turning fearful memories into fearless ones.

Therefore, the fear of falling has been installed within us from an early age and reinforced through life. Some scientists would even argue that it is engrained in our brains as a primal instinct – evolutionarily inherited. So how do we convince our brain that falling unexpectedly from a sport climb is safe (and fun) and there’s no need to create the fear response?
