๐Ÿ”ฅ That Escalated Quickly! ๐Ÿ”ฅ
A great warm-up or reward game to use with older students, especially those working on perspective taking and conversational turn-taking.

Itโ€™s fast, funny, and gets everyone thinking about how conversations can shift, grow, andโ€ฆ escalate! A great way to build flexibility, shared thinking, and social awareness in a low-pressure, high-engagement way โœจ

โ„๏ธโ›„ Snowman Fun With AAC! โ›„โ„๏ธ
We have been getting creative using a free resource from the ACE Centre: build-a-snowman board!
We used it to:
๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ Practice making choices
๐Ÿ“š Build vocabulary (hat, scarf, buttons, round, arm)
๐Ÿ’ฌ Model core words like want, put, like
๐ŸŽจ And of courseโ€ฆ design the coolest snowmen ever!
Activities like this are perfect for keeping sessions playful while supporting communication goals.
โ„๏ธ What winter-themed AAC or language activities are your go-tos?

๐Ÿ Autumn offers so many natural opportunities for speech and language learning!

Try:
๐Ÿ‚ Talking about what you see on a walk, e.g. crunchy leaves, conkers, acorns, squirrels!
๐Ÿ‚ Sorting and describing leaves by colour, size, or shape.
๐Ÿ‚ Sequencing steps to make hot chocolate or bake autumn biscuits.
๐Ÿ‚ Telling stories inspired by the changing season, โ€œOnce upon a time, a little leaf blew awayโ€ฆโ€

Simple seasonal activities can spark rich conversations and help children build vocabulary, sequencing, and storytelling skills ๐Ÿโœจ

Targeting story components brings an exciting element to sessions: embracing our studentsโ€™ creativity! We used a story spinner to select vocabulary for the character, setting, prop, problem and feeling, and then used a narrative strip to build sentences about the story together. Activities like these support expressive language skills and engagement โœ๏ธ๐ŸŽจ

The West London Speech and Language Therapy team believe that every child communicates best when they feel seen, heard, and understood.
Thatโ€™s why we use a child-led approach, meaning your childโ€™s interests and play guide the way in our therapy sessions. Whether itโ€™s letters, dinosaurs, trains or Peppa Pig ๐Ÿ” ๐Ÿฆ–๐Ÿš‚๐Ÿท - we follow their lead!

โœจ Why does it work?
โœ… Builds trust and engagement
โœ… Encourages natural communication
โœ… Supports emotional connection
โœ… Helps generalise skills beyond the therapy room
๐Ÿ‘ง๐Ÿฝ๐Ÿ‘ฆ๐Ÿผ Because when therapy feels like play, children are more motivated to join in, take turns, express themselves, and grow in confidence.

๐Ÿ’œ DLD Awareness Day ๐Ÿ’›
Two children in every classroom have Developmental Language Disorder (DLD). DLD is a condition that affects a childโ€™s ability to understand and use language.

If your child is having difficulty in understanding and/or talking, have you tried using these strategies? ๐Ÿ˜Š

๐Ÿ’›๐Ÿ’œ Today is DLD Awareness Day ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’›
Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) affects 7% of people, and yet it is still relatively unknown. DLD is a hidden but lifelong challenge with understanding and using language. Early support can make a world of difference, so letโ€™s raise awareness!

To support this yearโ€™s theme: You Canโ€™t See DLD, some of our team have provided **Cake and Tea for DLD** in their school settings this week ๐ŸŽ‚

We also wore yellow and purple to our team meeting this week, discussed DLD assessment as a team, created a short DLD presentation for school staff, a poster for parents, and we will be delivering a free training session for all our schools next Wednesday evening ๐Ÿ˜Š

West London Speech and Language Therapy was set up in 2013 by two therapists with 30 years of NHS experience. The team is commissioned to provide services into mainstream primary schools across a number of boroughs in West London, as well as to support individual families at home and in our clinic in Shepherdโ€™s Bush. West London Speech and Language Therapy is dedicated to providing high quality services to all children, families and schools we work with. We offer assessment and therapy for children with speech delay/disorder, language delay/disorder, dyspraxia, stammering, global developmental delay, Autism Spectrum Disorders and other social communication difficulties. We also offer online services through tele-practice so that you can access support no matter where you are! Please see our website for further information: www.wlspeechtherapy.co.uk.
