WE’RE HIRING! Part-time receptionist

We are recruiting for two friendly, competent receptionists to join our busy team. The receptionist role is a busy one as we have a team of 16 practitioners and see up to 500 patients a week.

Basic computer skills and being an excellent team player are essential, but other than that we provide full training so we just need individuals who are willing to learn.

Responsibilities include: greeting patients, telephone enquiries, appointment booking, receiving and logging payments, liaison with practitioners and general admin.

Hours are to be confirmed, but will be 2-3 shifts per week, (12-18 hours) and will probably include a Saturday morning. Holiday and sickness cover will also be required.

This position would typically suit a local person, who enjoys meeting people and is comfortable within a multi-tasking environment, and who would enjoy a few regular hours work each week and feeling part of a team.

The pay is £13.25 per hour, and £13.75 after 6pm and on Saturdays, rising by £0.50 per hour after 6 months’ employment.

Yesterday, the World Health Organization (WHO) launched its new guidelines for the non-surgical management of chronic primary low back pain in adults in primary and community care settings. These provide evidence-informed recommendations on non-surgical interventions for chronic primary LBP (CPLBP) to improve CPLBP-related health and wellbeing outcomes. The Guideline Development Group included chiropractors and received evidence commissioned by WHO, from sources including the World Federation of Chiropractic - WFC's Research Committee Chair, Dr Sidney Rubinstein, who led three of the systematic reviews informing the guideline recommendations.

Commenting on the launch of this important document, BCA President, Tim Button, said: “Its wonderful to see the new World Health Organisation guidelines. These heavily endorse EPIC (evidence-based, people-centered, interprofessional and collaborative) pillars. The guidelines reflect our own ethos and values around people-centered care, which is at the core of the BCA and what it means to be a BCA chiropractor.”

“The Role of Chiropractors as Public Health Advocates”

Over the last year, a specific focus on physical activity, or more importantly, physical inactivity has been adopted by various national and international chiropractic organisations. The World Federation of Chiropractic’s (WFC) Public Health Committee launched a 2022/23 Physical Activity Campaign, and the Royal College of Chiropractors (RCC) released a Physical Activity Toolkit this autumn.

In this article, BCA Board Member, Faye Deane, delves into the role of chiropractors in promoting physical activity and optimal health and wellbeing through patient education, shared decision making and person-centred care.

The British Chiropractic Association in their recent report in partnership with One Poll, explored the impacts of musculoskeletal (MSK) issues facing the UK public and found that over half of men in the UK (51%) have avoided consulting their GP for issues related to back and joint pain.

As part of Men’s Health Month, the BCA are empowering men around the UK to seek attention from healthcare professionals for their back pain and wider health issues. The research also found that almost half (48%) of men believed the issue would resolve itself, with the second most common reason (35%) being the difficulty of securing an appointment.

This figure is notably lower than that for women, as only a third (33%) have refrained from seeing their GP, and just over a quarter (27%) believed their condition would improve on its own.

The study also found that:

A staggering 18% of British men have stopped work due to their bone and joint pain.
Almost two thirds (64%) of British men use exercise as a way to manage bone and joint pain.
A whopping 62% of British men are considering turning to private healthcare to treat their bone and joint pain.

The Waldegrave Clinic strongly advise that men seek help for their back or join pain from their GP or other healthcare professional, such a chiropractor.

Today is World Arthritis Day and this year we spoke with BCA Member and Chiropractor, Matthew Barks about hip osteoarthritis and the clinical advice and treatment options from a musculoskeletal and chiropractic perspective.

Pain arising from the hip and the surrounding tissues can limited a person’s ability to undertake and enjoy their normal activities of daily living, including being able to work, spend time with their loved ones or to have a good night’s sleep. Hip osteoarthritis specifically, is most common in men under the age of 50 and in women over the age of 50. Pain is typically reported into the groin and lateral hip, however, it can also be present into the lower back and the knee.

This inspiring day will give you everything you need to know about your first or second marathon in an exciting new way. The day will take place on St Mary’s University campus where we have state-of-the-art facilities such as the Sir Mo Farah running track and the Performance Education Centre.
It is interactive, collaborative, confidence boosting, and fun and will be delivered by experts in the field and very importantly by those who experienced the first marathon dilemma and have now experienced many marathons and taught others how to achieve this goal.

The course is perfect for:
First or second time marathon runners – able bodied and disabled
Park runners who would like to build up to a marathon
Running club runners
Charity place runners who are doing it all on their own
Anyone who would love to run a marathon but doesn’t know where to start.

It’s and this year, BCA Member and chiropractor, Marc Sanders, discusses the role chiropractors can play in recognising signs of potential ill health in male patients.
Men’s Health Week is a good reminder for men to take control of their health.

It’s an opportunity to take action and make that appointment that you’ve been putting off. Maybe it’s a niggling joint injury that you’ve had for years but have never got around to seeing someone about it. Perhaps it’s symptoms to do with your heart, breathing, or a mole you’re worried about. Use this week to look after yourself and book an appointment in.
