Environmental Arts Therapy Conference

Environmental arts therapy is an arts-based approach to working therapeutically in outdoor spaces and emerges from the creative exchange that has occurred between the ecopsychology movement and the arts therapies professions and communities.

The purpose of the conference is to provide a platform to share the methods, approaches, theory base and research in this area of innovative integrative arts therapy practice. The day will allow us to experience what happens when we take our art, drama, music, and movement therapy practices outdoors. The themes of the day include:

• Nature’s metaphoric language
• Core skills when working outdoors
• Sensory play outdoors with children
• Groups work, adults, and seasonal themes

December is a time of descent as we move into the deepest, darkest night of winter. Time to gather our resources, family, and friends to share our warmth and love. Rowan is the tree associated with December and is a tree of guidance and protection. Light a candle this mid-winter night.

November represents new beginnings as the Celtic new year begins now as the seeds fall along with the leaves in this beautiful autumn season. The tree associated with November is the silver birch, the tree of inception and alchemy. Find a golden silver birch and see what it has to share with you at this point in the year.

The Celtic year follows the lunar calendar and the year ends and begins over the next 3 days. This is a time of remembrance and reflection. Halloween, Samhain, all souls and all saints all occur over the next three days and all mark a time of remembrance and honoring our ancestors. Be kind to yourself.

The season is beginning to turn from the harvest of summer to the bitter fruits of September. The tree/creeper associated with September is ivy and here we find its shadowy power, the block of ivy and its release as it flows across the forest floor.

Beltaine - bright fire - the blossoming of the Hawthorn and the sent of summer in the air. The Navajo refer to the 'pollen path' and hawthorn marks a white trail across the countryside as we look to connect with the our path of the heart.

The tree the Celts associated with March was the Ash or the 'world tree'. This is a time of alchemical change in nature as we pass the tipping point of the equinox we begin to see the new signs of growth emerge from the ashes of winter.

The tree the Celts associated with February is Willow, queen of the waters. This month we move back into feeling and willow connects us with the flow of water and the flow of our feelings as we pass through Imbolc, lent and valentine's day.

January can be cold, grey and harsh. It is a time of waiting and resting. waiting for the return of the sun and waiting for the spring. It can be a long wait. Alder is the tree associated with January and it speaks of balance and endurance. The themes we work with this month are of balance, of feeling and doing, and the bridge crossing from winter into our year ahead.

Silver Birch is the tree associated with the month of November, this youthful and feminine tree stands at the gateway towards the dark half of the year. New beginnings as autumn ends and the winter months begin.
