✨ SPEAKER SPOTLIGHT✨

Dr Anita O'Donovan is an Assistant Professor in the Discipline of Radiation Therapy at Trinity College Dublin, Ireland and postgraduate Course Director. She has extensive clinical and academic experience in radiotherapy, geriatric oncology and patient-centred care and her research focuses on integrating frailty assessment into radiotherapy pathways to optimise treatment decisions for older adults with cancer. Anita has contributed to national and international collaborations in radiation therapy education and research, with a particular emphasis on evidence-based, age-adapted cancer care. She has published and presented widely on radiotherapy practice, clinical decision-making and education in oncology. She is committed to advancing the role of therapeutic radiographers in multidisciplinary care, ensuring that radiotherapy delivery remains equitable, compassionate and responsive to the needs of an ageing population.

Dr Alan McWilliam is Reader in Translational Radiotherapy Physics at The University of Manchester. His primary research themes are 1) analysis of radiotherapy outcomes, primarily using voxel-based analysis techniques to best understand how the full, 3-dimensional, dose distribution affects patients’ response to radiation, and 2) the development of quantitative imaging biomarkers to inform patient risk stratification, with a focus on body composition.

✨ SPEAKER SPOTLIGHT✨

Christian Emery is a Diagnostic Radiographer and PhD Candidate in Health and Social Care at Birmingham City University, funded through the Vice Chancellor’s PhD Studentship. His doctoral research explores the lived experiences of diagnostic radiographers performing imaging examinations for people from prison in acute hospital settings in the UK.

He holds a First-Class Honours degree in Diagnostic Imaging Technology from the University of Cape Coast, Ghana, and a Postgraduate Certificate in Research Practice from Birmingham City University. His research interests include prison healthcare in diagnostic radiography, MRI education, training and workforce development in Africa, environmental sustainability in medical imaging, and artificial intelligence in radiography.

Dr Rebecca Wiles is a consultant radiologist with specialist interests in gynaecological and gastrointestinal imaging, working in NHS University Hospitals of Liverpool Group. She has a strong commitment to education, research, and policy development. She is passionate about teaching radiology at undergraduate and postgraduate level and has extensive experience delivering both in‑person and virtual teaching. She is regularly invited to speak and chair sessions at major national and international conference. She is currently leading the development of national guidelines on imaging pregnant patients presenting with suspected acute abdominal pathology and serves as an active BSUR committee member.

Dr David Bird is a principal clinical scientist and holds an NIHR Senior Clinical and Practitioner Research Award (SCPRA). He leads radiotherapy imaging clinical innovation at the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. David completed his PhD in 2021, focused on MR‑only planning for anorectal cancers, and now leads the clinical implementation of advanced technologies including MR‑only treatment pathways and adaptive CBCT workflows. His clinical academic focus is translational research delivery, bridging the gap between research and clinical practice, for example 4D-MRI. He is also passionate about to developing research capacity within clinical teams and supporting the next generation of clinical researchers.

📢 UKIO LAUNCHES THE INAUGURAL PRESIDENTS’ AWARDS

We are excited to announce a new initiative at UKIO - the UKIO Presidents' Awards - designed to celebrate the outstanding individuals and teams delivering frontline imaging and oncology services across the UK.

These awards will recognise exceptional contributions to patient care, innovation, education, sustainability, and leadership within our community, and we warmly invite nominations for both individuals and teams across the categories listed below.

✨1. Presidents’ Medal for Outstanding Contribution to Imaging or Oncology
✨2. Educator of the Year
✨3. Sustainability Initiative of the Year
✨4. Innovator of the Year
✨5. Industry Leader of the Year

All nominations will be reviewed by the Vice Presidents of the UKIO working party, and winners will be announced at the UKIO Presidents’ Awards Ceremony during the final plenary session at on Wednesday 10 June 2026.

There are just under 4 weeks left to apply to Pitch your Project at .

As part of UKIO 2026, and its commitment to research, the Trustees of ROC (Radiology and Oncology Congresses) are once again offering up to four grants of £5K each to fund a research or service improvement project. Applications are invited from novice researchers to present a project proposal at the UKIO congress and be considered for one of the grants. Shortlisted applicants will be expected to present to a panel in a session on Monday 8 June.
