World Su***de Prevention Day 2021
While there is still a long way to go in destigmatising and demystifying suicidal ideation and su***de World Su***de Prevention Day creates a platform for awareness, education and advocacy. But this is just one ingredient to the solution.
Suicidal ideation is a symptom that presents across many of the spectrums of psychological health and is experienced by around 1 in 5 people. The more we understand suicidal ideation as a symptom the more we can support people experiencing ideation and intrusive thoughts by making access to resources, management and prevention easier.
The resources that support people who are in a crisis are essential but if we rely on them as the answer we are agreeing that su***de is an individual issue.
By doing this we place the burden on the person to fix themselves rather than looking at what issues cause the symptom such as whether or not that person has access to housing, food security, healthcare, psychological care, education, economic and political stability, autonomy, safety, inclusivity, social connection and good governance.
No one should have to manage the burden of feeling like the world is better off without them because of poor governance and preventable systemic issues.
