Good first aid following a burn can make an enormous difference in recovery times and the severity of scarring. Remember COOL, CALL, COVER.

Did you know peanuts may be introduced as soon as baby is ready for weaning, which is generally around 4- 6 months of age.

Whole peanuts, chopped peanuts, and peanut butter are choking hazards for babies and children, so make sure to know how to prepare them safely ⬇️⬇️

UK researchers say peanut allergy could plummet by 77% if peanut products were added to all babies’ diets at four to six months of age.

Peanut allergy has seen a three-fold increase in recent decades. It now affects around one in 50 children in the UK.
However, there is increasing evidence that eating peanut products from an early age can reduce the risk of allergy and help reverse this trend.

Now, a new study has gone even further to assess the best time to introduce the allergen into babies’ diets, identifying a clear ‘window of opportunity’ between four and six months of age depending on the child’s health.

Overall, the data found that introducing peanut products into all babies’ diets by six months could reduce peanut allergy across the population by up to 77%.
Waiting to introduce the peanut products until 12 months of age would lead to only a 33% reduction.

Do you know the 50p rule? If your child has a burn bigger than this you need to get medical advice right away.

Babies, toddlers and preschoolers have delicate skin that burns easily. Knowing what to do if your child suffers a burn can mean the difference between lifelong scarring and a child who heals well.

Remember COOL, CALL, COVER:

COOL the burn for 20 minutes under cool running water.
CALL for help for any burn bigger than a 50p coin.
COVER the burn loosely with cling film or a clean, non-fluffy dressing or cloth.

Driving with Baby? Here’s How to Make Every Trip a Safe One 👶✨

Car seats are essential for your baby’s safety while driving, but babies shouldn’t sleep in them for long periods. Research has found that young babies may be at risk of breathing difficulties if they sleep upright in a seated position for too long.

Follow these tips to help keep your baby safe while travelling in a car seat.
🔺Avoid driving long distances with pre-term and young babies. Research has found that young babies may be at risk of breathing difficulties if they sleep upright in a seated position for too long, which can increase the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).
🔺Stop and take regular breaks if you’re driving a long way. This will allow you to check on your baby, take them out of the car seat and let them stretch and move around.
🔺If possible, have a second adult in the back seat with your baby. If you’re travelling alone, use a mirror to keep an eye on them.
🔺If your baby changes their position and slumps forward, stop straight away. Then take them out of the car seat and sit them upright before continuing on your journey.
🔺Choose a rear-facing baby seat. This is essential for safety. They provide better protection for the baby’s head, neck and spine compared to forward-facing seats.
🔺Make sure you have the right car seat for your baby’s weight and that it’s fitted properly – many shops will help with this.

It’s OK for your baby to fall asleep in a car seat when travelling, but take them out as soon as you get to your destination and place them on a firm, flat surface to sleep.

It's no surprise this time of year A&E treat more people with burns than any other time of the year.

Every year, around November 5th, more than 1,000 people are likely to suffer injuries due to fireworks. Nearly 400 accidents are likely to involve children under the age of 13.

STAY SAFE, FOLLOW THE FIREWORK CODE AND NEVER LET A CHILD HANDLE OR LIGHT A FIREWORK

1. Plan your firework display to make it safe and enjoyable.
2. Keep fireworks in a closed box and use then one at a time.
3. Read and follow the instructions on each
firework using a torch if necessary.
4. Light the firework at arm's length with a taper and stand well back.
5. Keep naked flames, including ci******es, away from fireworks.
6. Never return to a firework once it has been lit.
7. Don't put fireworks in pockets and never throw them.
8. Direct any rocket fireworks well away from spectators.
9. Never use paraffin or petrol on a bonfire.
10. Make sure that the fire is out and
surroundings are made safe before leaving

Bonfire Night is approaching and although it is exciting for little ones, it is also filled with dangers that could cause your child an accident. 🧨

Over 550 children under 16 are taken to A&E in the four weeks surrounding bonfire night, and sparklers are statistically the most dangerous fireworks for accidents.

⚠️ A sparkler can burn at over 1600 degrees, which is 16 times hotter than boiling water.

Not only is the sparkler stick itself incredibly hot and able to burn the body quickly, sparks emitted from sparklers can also land and set fire to materials.

Safety is paramount when children are using sparklers on Bonfire Night. Here are some useful tips to keep your little one safe:

1. Always have a responsible adult supervise children while they use sparklers.

2. Ensure children wear non-flammable clothing, and consider gloves to protect their hands.

3. Teach children to hold sparklers at arm's length and away from the body. Never wave them close to the face.

4. Give each child only one sparkler at a time to prevent accidents.

5. Have a bucket of water nearby to extinguish sparklers when they are done, and place used sparklers in the bucket of water, as they can remain hot for a while.

7. Instruct children not to run with sparklers to avoid tripping and falling.

8. Emphasise the importance of not touching the hot end of a sparkler or waving it near others.

9. Ensure children maintain a safe distance from other fireworks and bonfires.

By following these safety guidelines, you can help children enjoy sparklers on Bonfire Night while minimizing risks.
