We have published the findings of our themed review into the provision of weight management services by pharmacies.

As demand for these services continues to grow, the review highlights the importance of ensuring that appropriate safeguards and governance arrangements are consistently in place to protect patient safety.

The review sets out clear expectations for pharmacy owners and superintendent pharmacists, including:

• Ensuring prescribing decisions are based on robust and appropriate clinical assessments
• Verifying key patient information, rather than relying solely on self-reported data
• Maintaining effective two-way communication between the prescriber and the person receiving care
• Strengthening governance frameworks, including audit, risk management, and accountability processes

These measures are particularly important in the context of remote and online service delivery, where additional risks may arise.

Pharmacies providing weight management services must ensure that care is person-centred, clinically appropriate, and delivered in line with our standards for registered pharmacies.
We will continue to engage with the sector to support improvement and will take action where necessary to ensure patient safety is not compromised.

A reminder for pharmacy owners and superintendent pharmacists:

When a pharmacy changes ownership, the new owner must notify the GPhC within 28 days. The form must be submitted after completion, signed by both previous and new owners, and the fee paid.

Missing the deadline means the pharmacy will be removed from the register, requiring closure and restoration.

If the new owner organisation doesn’t already own pharmacies, a superintendent pharmacist must also be nominated.

The General Pharmaceutical Council has published a new position statement on the use of artificial intelligence in pharmacy, to support safe, effective and responsible use of AI.

Artificial intelligence has the potential to support improvements in pharmacy services and patient care, but it also brings new challenges. We want to support everyone working in pharmacy to use AI effectively to improve patient care, at the same time as protecting patient safety.

The statement emphasises that while AI can support clinical decision-making and improve efficiency, pharmacists and pharmacy technicians remain accountable for patient care. We have also published supporting advice relating to the use of AI in education and training as well as its use in revalidation.
