During the Second World War the Maudsley, concerned about the possibility of being caught up in the air raids engulfing central London, split into two.

The split later caused a difference in treatment approaches, with Dr Walter Maclay, favouring psychotherapies like exercise, occupational therapy and William Sargant taking to physical treatments, including the then relatively new Electro-Convulsive Therapy.

❤️Today, we hear from Chief of Staff Eliza Wright, about her reflections ahead of Remembrance Day as someone with family and a spouse who have served and currently serve our country. She said:

“Remembrance for me is an opportunity to reflect and think of those who have served. So often this is assumed to just refer to older veterans, with the image of ‘Chelsea Pensioners’ coming to mind. I do remember my grandparents at this time, and their service during World War 2. However, I also think of my husband and his colleagues who are serving and what this service means, particularly the many forms it takes. One of my husband’s proudest moments was delivering humanitarian aid after the earthquakes in Turkey. "

❤️Every year on 11 November, we mark Remembrance Day to honour and remember the sacrifices of the Armed Forces Community in the line of duty.

Cecilia Jakobsson, Trainee Clinical Psychologist and wife of a member of the Armed Forces, shared some reflections:

“As a spouse of a member of the Armed Forces, I am proud of my husband’s commitment and sacrifice to serving his country. At times, we have long periods of separation with uncertainty about when we will be reunited, which can be challenging."
