“What are the things you wanted to say but you never did?”

"Everything started soon after moving to the USA from the Philippines. Artist Geloy Concepcion was about to quit photography when he decided to find a way to offload a folder of "unsuable film snapshots". Remembering how he liked to wander around Manila searching for walls spray-painted with words by strangers, he decided to “vandalize” his own photos. The text would come from a very simple question:

“What are the things you wanted to say but you never did?”

That was the beginning of a project that has now evolved in a collective artwork, where Geloy weaves together hundreds of submitted anonymous photos and confessions, creating some of the most moving, raw and powerful images on social media."

"We become who we are through the responses of others. The self is not born in isolation but in relation... It is a self that emerges in dialogue with the gaze of the other, a reflection of the world’s expectations more than his essence."

- Neil Nallan Chakravartula, social and critical psychologist

A child's fascination with the surrounding world soon translates into the realization that we ourselves are one of the creatures inhabiting it. We live in our social environments, but also in our bodies and our minds. There are many teachings about the material world, but how well do we know our psy...

"We become who we are through the responses of others. The self is not born in isolation but in relation. Consider a young boy who is quiet at home but disruptive in school. Over time, he begins to see himself as the troublemaker, not because of something innate, but because that is how teachers, peers, and disciplinary systems consistently respond to him. His sense of self—loud, defiant, resistant, is not merely expressed in those moments, but formed by them. It is a self that emerges in dialogue with the gaze of the other, a reflection of the world’s expectations more than his essence."

"My problem, as I realised in a session not long ago with my psychoanalyst, is that I have been swimming in shallow waters. This is something I have seen many times in myself, and perhaps these moments of recognition help me to see it in my patients – the unconscious pull to stay in the emotional shallows, not to delve deeper into your own internal experience and understand the more profound wishes and hungers that drive us. Instead, we scroll away our difficult feelings, staring at whatever screen is in front of us rather than looking inwards. We cheapen our relationships with others, craving and offering a particular kind of emotional stroking that keeps things at surface level. We buy things, we watch things, we listen to things, we squeeze things, we try things on and send things back, and we do, do, do – we do to stay in the shallows, so we don’t have to be in the depths."

We are used to skimming the surface of our emotions, distracting ourselves with endless doing. To discover what we really need, we must move beyond the shallows

"These patients came to me in various states of despair. Maybe it is only in this state of mind – when we are unsure of what to do, when we no longer know which way to go – that we are motivated to understand ourselves better."

“Shall I say that, for a child to be brought up so that he can discover the deepest part of his nature, someone has to be defied, and even at times hated, and who but the child’s own parents can be in a position to be hated without there being a danger of a complete break in the relationship?”
