When I was 22 a great friend of mine died, quite suddenly.

When I was 36, another old friend died of cancer.

And the losses get more frequent as you get older.

How important it is then, to make the most of our short time here. I'm reminded of a poem by Mary Oliver, where she asks:

'Tell me, what is it you plan to do
with your one wild and precious life?'

As the cold months descend on the Northern hemisphere, I've been thinking how much I look forward to this time of year.

Yes it's cold, but it's also a time to go into yourself, for reflection.

Animals start the search for a good place to hibernate.

For humans it feels like the right time to pause and take stock.

You didn’t just “miss out on a few parties.” You lost a vital part of growing into who you are.

There’s an unspoken grief young adults may carry after the pandemic. It’s not just about education or milestones missed. It’s the sense that a part of their development was suspended. Like a chapter in the middle of the book never got written.

That doesn’t mean you’re stuck forever. But it may take some attention and support to find your footing.

In therapy, there’s space for this. No pressure to explain it neatly. Just space to take seriously what was lost and what might still be waiting to grow.

What happens when your life was meant to be taking off, but the world shut down instead?

If you were a teenager or in your early twenties when the pandemic hit, you might still be feeling the effects.

Maybe not in obvious ways. Maybe you’re doing what you’re “supposed” to (studying, working, socialising) but still feel somehow adrift.

In therapy, I’ve seen this. People who feel stuck, or behind, or numb. They’re not making it up. Their inner world just hasn’t caught up.

If this resonates, you’re not alone. It’s something that can be worked through, with time and care.

Being hard on ourselves … is familiar to many of us. We often distance ourselves from emotional pain—our vulnerability, anger, jealousy, fear—by covering it over with self-judgment.

When we push away parts of ourselves, we only dig ourselves deeper into the trance of unworthiness. We might clearly perceive the faults and shortcomings of ourselves and others, we might recognize we are judging, we might acknowledge that we are stuck in anger or craving or fear.

We might even say we accept what we see, but Radical Acceptance has two wings—compassion as well as mindfulness. We cannot be accepting of our experience if our heart has hardened in fear and blame. RA, CH.8, P. 199

Therapy is one of the few places in modern life where you’re not expected to perform.

You don’t have to be articulate. You don’t have to be “making progress.”

You can pause. Ramble. Cry. Swear. Sit in silence.

That’s not avoidance, it’s healing.

And you can explore, your hopes, dreams and what's actually missing from your life.

In this space, you don’t have to do it all alone. You just have to show up.

I’ve found that what a person usually needs when fear is intense is to “be accompanied”—an experience of another person’s caring, accepting presence. If a child is hurt or frightened, showing that we understand and care about her feelings is more important than looking for a Band-Aid or explaining why everything will be all right. The core of vulnerability is feeling alone in one’s pain; connection with another person eases fear and increases the sense of safety. TR, Ch. 9, P. 140

We live in a culture that constantly pushes us to self-improve, to 'fix' ourselves.

But what if you’re not broken?

Therapy offers a different lens. It’s not about turning you into someone else. It’s about understanding what’s really going on, emotionally and relationally, and growing from there.

So if you’re tired of trying to out-discipline your feelings, therapy might be the space where something actually shifts.

Therapy isn’t just for people in crisis. It’s also for people in transition.

People asking questions. People who want more than coping. They want clarity, connection, and a life that works for them.

So you don’t have to be falling apart to benefit from therapy. You just need to come as you are, ready for a therapeutic space where you can be fully heard.

What if we could recognize our faults and look to see what is beyond them?

What if we could see, with great tenderness, the painful unmet needs that have shaped our behaviors?

For many of us, this process is the work of a lifetime, one that requires the active support of loved ones, therapists, spiritual teachers, or healers.

Yet it begins the moment that we are willing to look at ourselves through the eyes of compassion.

Feeling confused doesn’t always mean you don’t know. Sometimes it means you’re not ready to face what you already suspect.

Therapy makes room for that. No pressure, no judgment, just a space to begin listening to the parts of you that already know what’s true.

If something’s felt foggy for a while, I can help you start clearing the view.
