Delighted to say it's my honour to be joining the team at The House of St Barnabas as a counsellor on their employment programme. The charity helps London's homeless and is also a not for profit members' club, set in a wonderful historic building that has been philanthropic since 1862.

The House of St Barnabas is a private members club in London. A different kind of member community, rooted in people, music and culture. All profits are invested to break the cycle of homelessness.

After an assault left Stephen (Constant Follower) with life altering injuries and PTSD, he turned to Help Musicians for help. He received support that allowed him to turn his life around.

In the years since, Stephen has received a Scottish Album of the Year nomination for his record Neither Is Nor Ever Was released on his dream label, Shimmy Disc.

This week we’ve joined the Big Give so we can help more musicians like Stephen. Can you help us reach our £17,000 target?

So said Roosevelt. I recently I fell head over heels right down this rabbit hole, oh what a tumble; no-one is immune! The antidote? Be aware you're doing it then climb right back out 😊

These principles are so powerful. Recently, I felt I was owed an apology by someone I'd nurtured for years and whose career I furthered massively. Then out of the blue they bit me and I bled. The apology I was seeking actually came from myself to myself for not seeing how I became caught up in a one sided friendship: sometimes doing all the giving can enable the dysfunction to continue unseen. So yes, do voice your needs, and yes The Power of Apology is huge. Nurture yourself and forgive your younger self, because you know more now than you did back then.

Taking Responsibility: The Cornerstone of Personal Growth

In the journey of life, it's easy to point fingers at circumstances, people, or events that we believe are holding us back. However, personal growth truly begins when we stop shifting the blame and start shouldering responsibility for our actions and decisions.

# # # # Owning Up to Your Choices

The first step in taking responsibility is owning up to your choices. Whether they lead to success or failure, acknowledging that you are the architect of your destiny is empowering. It puts you in the driver's seat and prepares you for the journey ahead.

# # # # Communication: A Two-Way Street

Personal growth isn't solely about introspection; it involves understanding the world and people around you. Communication plays an indispensable role here. When we voice our needs clearly and listen actively to others, we foster a constructive environment. This opens up pathways for better relationships, greater emotional intelligence, and ultimately, personal development.

# # # # Honesty is the Best Policy

Being truthful, not only with others but also with oneself, is essential. Honesty helps you confront your flaws and weaknesses, providing a foundation on which to build. Lying or concealing the truth may provide temporary relief, but it impedes growth in the long run.

# # # # The Power of Apology

No one is perfect. We all make mistakes, but what separates the mature from the immature is the ability to apologize sincerely when you're wrong. An apology can mend fences, but more importantly, it teaches humility and the value of learning from your missteps.

# # # # The Result? A Balanced You

When you start taking responsibility, communicate effectively, stay truthful, and apologize for your wrongs, the benefits are manifold. You not only grow as an individual but also influence those around you positively. You’ll find yourself capable of establishing healthier relationships, achieving career goals, and attaining a deeper understanding of yourself and your place in the world.

In conclusion, the road to personal growth is paved with self-responsibility, effective communication, honesty, and the courage to apologize when wrong. These are not just behaviors but virtues that enrich our character and lead us towards a more fulfilling life.

This is my screensaver 'The Fighting Temeraire' by Turner. Turner's painting shows the final journey of the Temeraire in 1838/9, as the ship is towed by tiny tug boats from Sheerness in Kent along the river Thames to Rotherhithe to be broken up. Of course Turner added drama, of course modern tech added to that and that's what I love; adaptation equals survival.

The difference is we as humans can learn and mend from the canker but first, we have to recognise its effect on us 😊.
