YOU'RE ONLY AS OLD AS THE CONDITION OF YOUR SPINE:

In which case I am at least 472 years old (or around half the age of Mary Berry 🎂). Pr*****ed discs and a painfully degenerative condition in my hip joints have consigned me to the sofa for the foreseeable weeks/months until I am recovered from various upcoming procedures/surgeries.
+
However, this isn't the end of the line for me. There is a road back from this - I will lift weights again, I will still get my black belt in jiu jitsu, I will still be as fit and active as ever. It is however going to take some work.
+
I'm going to start sharing my journey back to rebuilding myself on here - I see a lot of clients who have had similar injuries, only they stopped for years and never fought back. Over time, the weight piled on, the weakness set in, and they became defined by their injuries.
+
There's lots of you fitting that bill who look at what we do and think 'I could never do that'.
+
Well, you can. There's just a route that needs to be taken first to get you to the starting blocks. I'm going to be seeking a lot of help and advice from at Kinect Health so anyone who is in need of injury rehab, he's my go to guy. 💪🏻
A body is built from the foundation up and, when the foundations are damaged, that's where the work needs to start. First procedure on my hips starts today.

Unsurprisingly, after a day of shooting my tin man attempts at 'flow', I don't think the campaign was ever used. With any luck the files were sealed in a lead box and thrown into the ocean to spare the world from my practice.

The missing element in much of the training I have witnessed in recent years.
The hardest thing for me to convey to my online clients is the reality of how hard I need them to work to produce their own Roar Transformation. The workouts should be HARD and weight selection is vital to creating that intensity, as is the will to push beyond the point where you would naturally stop.
Everything we do at Roar is deeply rooted in scientific principle but the methodology is nothing without the intensity to make it count for something (a point some of the 'Evidence Based' Personal Trainers out there may want to take on board...).

MOTIVATION VS DISCIPLINE IN BODY TRANSFORMATION:

People often cite lack of motivation as their reason for not adhering to exercise or a healthy diet.
Motivation is often also cited as a reason for employing a Personal Trainer.
However, we in the Fitness Industry cannot provide you with endless motivation. We don't necessarily have it ourselves. Motivation is a fleeting state, subject to change without notice.
What we (and all successful people in any field) have is discipline. We show up at work, show up to the gym, show up to our responsibilities, day in day out whether we are motivated or not. Because we are disciplined.
There's a famous quote along the lines of "Discipline is the ability to get something done whether you want to or not".
That's the secret right there, to a successful Body Transformation or whatever other endeavour you choose. It's discipline that gets me up every morning at 4.30am for my clients, and it is discipline that we can teach and instil not motivation.
Motivation is for vapid cheerleaders. Discipline for serious achievers.

Confusing yourself over what workout programme to follow? My advice - simplify, simplify, simplify!

Take one full body workout. 12-15 reps each workout. 3 sets each. Do it religiously 3 times a week for the next 2-4 weeks. Gain mastery over that routine and increase your strength in those lifts every single session - Progressive Overload is king (It doesn't take a huge leap of faith to make the connection between being stronger and being in better shape).

Focus on intensity, technique and mind/muscle connection.

Stop worrying whether you need to be doing barbell military press, dumbbell Arnold Press, or whatever - pick one that feels good and get strong at it. Something doesn't feel good? Don't do it. Just because Men's Health said it was the 'One Exercise You Must Do!!!!' doesn't mean it's right for you.

All those advanced techniques mean nothing until you've got a strong foundation in the basics.

Once mastered there's no need to re-invent the wheel. Keep your best exercises, change up a couple of the smaller exercises, reduce the reps slightly, and go back in.

For 90% of you it's that simple. Pick the basics that you like. Get really strong at them. Keep going with minimal alterations. That's about as close to a 'Fitness Secret That PT's Don't Want You To Know' that there is.

Your Ultimate Self. Who would it be?

Many people struggle with goal setting past losing a few pounds or some other fluff that likely won't be achieved. That likely won't be achieved because it doesn't mean anything. I find an important visualisation technique to be visualising your ideal or 'ultimate' self.
Personally my visualised Ultimate Self is Strong. Able to fight and protect. A healthy inspiration to my children. Has a solid business but with time to spend with family. Moves well and lives pain free. Good energy and vitality Financially secure. Long lived. Minimum of stress.
Take a look at those different areas and establish strengths and weaknesses - what is already good and what needs development. What are you currently investing your time in vs what you need to be investing your time in. There's no point being a 10/10 in 1 area but a 1/10 in another. In fact it would probably be better to be a consistent 6 or 7 across the board. Generally speaking of course - if we were all moderately balanced there would be no Steve Jobs, no Nick Cave, no Anderson Silva. However, for most of us balance is good and healthy. How many of us actually have it though?
