This week gospel singers, Eden Grandeur, sung their lungs out at King’s Cross Station to help increase Londoners’ awareness of lung as part of the campaign. They were invited by Healthwatch Camden, who are working with North Central London Cancer Alliance and UCLH to spread the word about lung health and lung cancer screening. The setlist included gospel classics, as well as many songs about breath.

It was a great way to highlight that even if you feel healthy and can breathe well, can still be growing.

UCLH sends invitations to eligible residents in North Central London (NCL) to have Lung Cancer Screening. Participants need to be aged 55-74 who smoke or used to smoke.

Overall uptake NCL is 53%, targeted to rise to 62%, but currently uptake in Camden is the lowest at 49.8%. Since Lung Cancer Screening began in North Central London around three years ago, over 200 lung cancers have been diagnosed at early stages.

📚️Best-selling author Sharna Jackson visited children in University College Hospital this week to celebrate World Book Day.

Sharna, author of a series of children’s mystery novels, spent time chatting to children and signing copies of her latest book – The Street Art Mystery.

Her novels feature crime-solving children and their adventures, with her debut novel ‘High-Rise Mystery’ winning the Waterstones prize for Best Book for Younger Readers.

The special visit was organised by Huma Ahmed, senior health play specialist, as a treat for the children.

Huma said: “It was so lovely for Sharna to visit children in University College Hospital to celebrate World Book Day. The children had so many questions for her about the books, how she became an author and also about her hobbies.

"They were also delighted to receive a copy of one of her books with a special message just for them.”

UCLH is accelerating clinical trial delivery so that patients gain access to new treatments sooner. The acceleration is happening through close collaboration between research teams and clinical services.

This work is supported by our National Institute for Health and Care Research infrastructure.

Pauline, 65, from Romford, Essex, works part time as a legal secretary and receptionist for a solicitors firm. She has been part of two early phase trials for advanced cancer at UCLH, and said: “The research team have been so good throughout the process. They have a genuine interest in my wellbeing and nothing is too much trouble for them.”

The UK Government has set national standards to speed up clinical trial set-up, making the NHS a more attractive place to do research and bringing more investment and innovation into the UK.

UCLH is meeting the Department of Health and Social Care - DHSC 150-day standard for clinical trial set-up in a growing number of trials. More than 20 trials have now recruited their first patient within the 150-day timeline, including some of our more complex trials.

The improvement in set up times has gone hand in hand with growth in the number of commercial studies hosted at UCLH. Between 2024 and 2025 the number of actively recruiting interventional commercial trials increased from 117 to 139. This work is in alignment with efforts by the new NIHR Industry Hub to attract more commercial trials to the UK.

Figures also show UCLH had the highest number of first global and first European recruits to commercial research studies in the UK in 2025.

UCLH Chief Executive David Probert said: “Research is integral to what we do at UCLH… The improvements we are making in research delivery reflect the outstanding work of our clinical and research teams and their continued commitment to improving patient care through research.”

Leading international experts, among them UCLH and UCL’s Professor John Bridgewater (pictured), are calling for urgent action to improve outcomes for people with bile duct cancer.

Professor Bridgewater, a consultant medical oncologist at UCLH and professor of medical oncology at the UCL Cancer Institute said: “Bile duct cancer remains one of the hardest cancers to treat. Earlier diagnosis, better access to specialist care, and routine molecular testing could dramatically improve survival.

“Too many UK patients are diagnosed when it is already too late. Faster diagnosis and fair access to advanced testing and treatments must become national priorities.”

A major new review published in BJU International highlights additional treatment options, lifestyle measures, and emerging monitoring tools that may support men with early prostate cancer who are managed through active surveillance. Three of the review’s authors are UCLH consultants (pictured), contributing expert insight into how care may continue to evolve.

The review emphasises three essential steps for men on active surveillance:
• Maintaining a healthy lifestyle
• Having regular PSA tests and MRI when recommended
• Talking through any additional treatments they are considering with their specialist team

These evidence based approaches can help patients feel confident and informed as they navigate their care.
