Are AI trainers any good or just cheap?

This month marks my 8th anniversary working out of PureGym Limehouse — and what a journey it’s been!

Over the years, I’ve:

This July marked the 8th birthday of Super Fit.

The idea was to provide a combination of personal training, physiotherapy and excellent customer service to clients.

The results have been consistently excellent with most clients achieving their health, fitness and rehabilitation goals.

It has been an interesting, intense and fulfilling experience working with my clients.

After nine weeks and just a little disruption, is fully refurbished and operational once more.

👉🏻 All new plate weights, barbells, dumbbells, sandbags, mats, medicine and crash balls balls.
👉🏻 Many more squat/bench press racks.
👉🏻 Female only section much better equipped and twice as big.
👉🏻 Studio re-painted and ceiling fixed.
👉🏻 Functional area less cluttered and sled track re-laid.
👉🏻 Windows clear of previous black screens providing more light.
👉🏻 New flooring through the gym and in the changing rooms.
👉🏻 Re-painted throughout and sealant in showers replaced.

Hyrox is a global all round fitness race that combines functional strength challenges, high intensity drills and running between stations, with a party at the end of course.

The different rounds which all involve a 1 km run are:

1️⃣ Wall balls
2️⃣ Famers carry
3️⃣ Sandbag lunges
4️⃣ Sled pull
5️⃣ Sled push
6️⃣ SkiErg
7️⃣ Rowing
8️⃣ Burpee broad jumps

To be able to compete well and enjoy the event, multi-faceted Hyrox training is required.

One very important fitness parameter to gain is good anaerobic fitness. Anaerobic respiration is where the body continues to produce energy but with insufficient oxygen to produce only water and CO2 as metabolites. Anaerobic respiration is much more limited in its capacity to generate energy but a person’s ability to produce energy with less than ideal oxygen levels can be improved with training as can one’s tolerance of the metabolites produced.

Another fitness parameter that is important to gain is power, which is the ability to generate force with rapid acceleration/deceleration, for example jumping, throwing or sprinting. Often bursts of power require anaerobic respiration.

Hyrox training can be performed in a gym as all the kit required to practise the individual Hyrox drills will be available. And outside those drills other important fitness parameters can be trained such as endurance and strength using regular gym equipment and a variety of specific exercises, drills and techniques.

My gym has just undergone a refurbishment and is well stocked with all new kit perfect for Hyrox training.

And my extensive training, near 30 years of experience, science-based approach, bags of enthusiasm and positive attitude can be put to use effective use in getting you ready for a Hyrox event and then maintaining your Hyrox specific fitness.

Two case studies of current clients:

Mr X started at 40 kg for deadlifts and back squats. He is now lifting and lowering with control 130 kg deadlifts and 132.5 kg back squats (achieved this week).

Miss Y started at 2 kg dumbbells for shoulder press and 20 kg for deadlifts and is now at 5 kg for shoulder press and is at 40 kg for deadlifts (again achieved this week).

Their techniques are smooth and metronomic with great eccentric control - this phase, which usually occurs during lowering weights, generates more strength than concentric contraction which usually occurs during the lift.

Dos and Don’ts of a Change to Exercising at New Year

1️⃣ Do Set 2025 Fitness Goals
There are several ways to go about this.  You could use a simple goal such as achieving a target weight or time over a running distance.  Or you could use SMART goals – Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Timed or PACT goals – Purposeful, Actionable, Continuous, Trackable.  SMART goals are useful for small, short-term goals and PACT goals are more useful for ambitious long term ones.

2️⃣ Don’t Try to Do Too Much Too Fast
Setting your 2025 fitness goals should help to prevent this but always be aware that you have to give your body and brain a chance to change before progressing your programme.  Significant changes to strength, endurance and power take around 6 weeks of regular training.  One of the most common ways to develop an injury is to try to do too much too fast.

3️⃣ Don’t Expect Too Much Too Fast
Don’t be concerned if after a few weeks you don’t see any change.  This is to be expected and results will manifest as you get to 6 weeks plus of a regular training programme.

4️⃣ Do be Careful Taking Advice from Those Who Recommend What Worked for Them
There are thousands of ‘influencers’ who are keen to get you to use their method that worked for them.  Even if what they say did work for them, don’t expect it to work for you.  It is best to use the massive wealth of scientific evidence to guide you and also to bear in mind that you are individual.  Any programme should be proven to work on many people and also be crafted for your individual needs.
