I find this to be one of the biggest tension points when it comes to health and fitness.

If it’s only ever been a reminder of your disliking of your body or feelings of insecurity and inadequacy - it might be worth not persevering at all and instead try going about it from a different perspective.

We tend to find a better longevity to physical culture this way, and it sure as s**t feels better.

What’s also worth mentioning in small print is most people who do this are often more successful in achieving their previous aesthetic pursuits by way of focusing on getting stronger and eating adequately to support this.

Feeling good in your own skin and positioning your physicality to allow you to get the most out of YOUR life is something I believe everybody should have.

Long Range Strength!

I have observed this to be one of the biggest contributors to well being available to us.

Being strong through large ranges of movement can keep you flexible, mobile and, well, STRONG!

Without having to juggle a bunch of different programs or modalities.

Instead I recommend training all the range your joints currently have and gently increasing them.

This can sound contradictory or confusing at first but it’s life changing if you take the time to practise it.

Whether you play a sport, or simply want to feel great in everyday life there’s not much that isn’t benefits by being strong through a lot of range.

Stay supple friends!

Just a two-minute two-pence on integrating with the friction of progression, personal development and simply enjoying the moment and being present in your life.

I’m fascinated by optimising this area, as the two are so often in contention if you go by the polarising advice and pithy statements that populate this space.

Finding your own personal speed with this is an important quest, in my opinion, and one that evolves with life’s seasons.

I wish you a whole and splendid week friends

💡 3 Tips For Doing Your Best When Life Gets TOUGH…

I’ll be honest, the last 2 years have totally kicked my ass. I haven’t felt much like training hard since before the pandemic, I’ve overcome a simultaneous whirlwind of losing my dad in agonising fashion, holding my business together, losing relationships and then starting a whole new chapter of being a dad after all of that!

This isn’t a woe is me - just an illustration that I haven’t been operating from the ‘optimal’ place when it comes to looking after myself, inside and out.

WHICH BRINGS US TO THE POINT.

🏋🏽‍♀️ Training wise; just doing ‘something’ has kept me moving, even if it feels like a far cry from my years of structured training. Some days I’ll jump in with a friend, others I’ll just stretch, or do 20/30 mins of strength stuff or 30-45 minutes of zone 2 on a bike. I haven’t felt like pushing myself at all for a very long time, but I’ve done my best not to check out completely, and it’s made a big difference to feeling my best.

🥗 Nutritionally I still aimed to stick to a whole food, high protein diet most of the time. There’s been a lot of ice cream and pizzas and eating my feelings in there too. But I also focused on eating delicious and nutritious food most of the time. In fact, cooking for me and Dih became a great pleasure and peace. Learning to prepare food well is an invaluable skill.

🧠 Perfectionism is a truly destructive force. It generally leads to mostly inaction and self loathing. I’ve had to do a lot of work to overcome this in all areas of my life and I’m still working on it. Just acknowledging that it’s never going to be the perfect time or circumstance to do anything and so doing SOMETHING always wins has helped me find new levels of physical, mental and creative health.

♥️ I hope my TED talk helps you think about ways you might be able to do something good for yourself today, even if you’re going through it.

Love J!

The 80/20 Rule!

A low maintenance approach to a balanced diet and positive relationship with food.

Both in the literature and infinite anecdotes does flexibility shine as imperative when it comes to a successful approach to nutrition and long term adherence.

Avoiding dichotomous thinking of ‘Good’ and ‘Bad’ foods is an important part of your mental health and in the practical pursuit of your fitness goals.

All of these things can and should be discussed at length, with plenty of nuance that is often missed here.

I hope this simply serves as a subtle prompt to remind you you can improve your health, look and feel your best AND enjoy a balanced lifestyle.

Lasting habit change is the backbone of success in your health and fitness goals, instead of the flash in the pan you’re often sold.

It’s just not as sexy.

But you can use BOTH.

Building on yesterday’s post you can get amped up and motivated and absolutely get results in a few months -

- AND ALSO be building a long term framework that will serve you for the rest of your life.

It will remind you that every choice you make from a place of self-care as a health seeking individual is an investment; it’s a tiny degree of shift that will contribute to that overall trajectory.

Don’t discount the small stuff!

And also enjoy your ice creams 😉

Have a splendid day!

Raw Dog Loads # 4

*Where I discuss fitness & nutrition topics that I wish everyone knew and embraced, but aren’t easy to sell or accept.*

👉🏼 It’s NOT your fault, but it IS your responsibility.

Buckle up mo********er, this raw dog load packs an emotional punch and as much nuance as I can muster in an Instagram post.

Much of who we are and what we do was dictated by our early formative experiences; how our parents raised us, the environment that we were in and the traumas that came our way - things largely out of our control.

Your physical and psychological habits have deep roots, which is why they can be such a fu**er to try and change - even if they are damaging to our well being and positive development.

> Your mother always commenting on your weight and appearance that’s made having a positive relationship with food and your body a constant struggle.

> The school kids that gasped and pointed at your stretch marks, forever making the idea of taking your shirt off in front of people nothing but nightmare fuel.

> The constant societal reinforcement that you should look a certain way all the time, twisting language and powerful imagery to make you hate yourself before you even know who you are.

It’s not your fault.

And I’m sorry it happened to you, but f**k them okay?

All the life that lay ahead of you demands to be lived wholeheartedly, not through the shackles of fear.

It’s not your fault, but it is your responsibility to get the f**k up and take the time to unpick this bulls**t so you can feel and do the things that make you happy.

It will take courage, vulnerability and discomfort, but no one can do it for you so please don’t wait in the sidelines any longer because of something that happened to you that you didn’t choose.

You can do this.

♥️

👉🏼 You Need More Clarity NOT Motivation.

Temporary surges of motivation have their place and they feel good, and I appreciate their value in the health and fitness space to get you going.

BUT.

If you want real change to occur, if you want to really feel connected to who you are and what you want then flipping between bouts of unpredictable motivation and self-loathing inducing inaction is not a particularly productive strategy.

Instead we’ll probably have to go a little further down the rabbit hole of who you are, where your priorities truly lay, and indeed if your current ones are serving you well.

Sure, this might lead to some uncomfortable truths, or confrontational changes but those things are waiting for you whether you choose to address them or not.

Getting loaded at the weekend, not exercising or snorting doughnuts off someone’s bum might be part of your story right now, and that’s all good - as long as you’re happy with the outcome.

If not let’s chat. Let’s get you feeling good.

It’s not a fancy exercise, workout or new diet plan that stands between you and feeling better, it’s clarity.

One love homies.

Episode 7 (link in bio).

Life Is Moments.

We forget the small moments because we’re too busy chasing the extraordinary.

Perhaps real joy is found in the unsexy, everyday moments we all overlook.

More poignant moments with my Dad, pitting a lot into perspective.

Those of you who watch, as always thank you, truly.

This is a very personal and challenging project, but still one I’m enthused to share as I learn, and hearing from people who watch does mean a lot to me.

Big Love.

What’s At The Heart Of A Good Life?

I sure as s**t won’t pretend to have the answer for you, but I’ll be damned if I don’t make these conversations louder and invite anyone who’s willing to join in.

To join in.

Love ya’ll.

Appreciate ya’ll.

Get your fine arse in the arena my friend.

👉🏼 If you don’t define your own standards someone else will, and they don’t always have your best interests at heart.

If you’re a guy and you let [collective] society tell you that to be ‘in shape’ or healthy you need a visible six pack, or swollen man pecs you can blindly trundle along and not only be subject to piss-poor practises but also just never feel good enough.

Who made you believe this absolutes? When did this steal into your life and tell you how to be?

Are you a girl that’s been told she has to appear to be some exiguous statue that looks like it weighs as much as a photograph of itself? Oh by the way you have hormonal make up that will play a heavy role in regulating this - OH BY THE WAY you shouldn’t talk about it.

Who told you you have to be like this? Did they tell you why?

When did this malice steal into our lives and make us feel shame?

I can already here the lamentations of my character limit —

BOTTOM LINE —

YOU get to set your own standards.
YOU get to decide how you’re gonna rock this show and what outfit to where while you’re doing it.
YOU get to decide how you want to look and FEEL.

This takes WORK.

This takes COURAGE.

This takes critical thinking.

I can’t do it for you.

All I can do right now is ask that you stop letting some one or some thing other than you make these calls for you, because I guarantee you that is the highway to misery.

And you deserve better.

Love J
