How soon can a patient get home after a DIEP flap surgery? What is the latest innovation inbreast reconstruction? And what other techniques are available for patients?

In this second part of our interview, Mr Dariush Nikkhah answers these questions and explains how minimal internal incisions with a DIEP flap surgery, a pioneering technique at the Royal Free Hospital, enable patients to experience less pain and shorter hospital stays. The latest innovation also includes making the surgery more efficient by introducing the dual-surgeon model, which minimises operative time β€”a unique feature at the Royal Free Hospital.

Mr Nikkhah also shared with us his passion and why he chose plastic surgery as his specialty. The Royal Free London has a huge heritage in plastic and reconstructive surgery, with Sir Harold Gillies, founder of plastic surgery was originally based in Hampstead. Plastic surgeons are one of the few specialists who can operate on the entire body and all age groups. It is a collaborative specialty and surgeons can work with a number of surgical teams. They are likened to a surgeon’s surgeons and are well known for innovation. Watch the interview πŸ‘‡

What is a DIEP flap surgery and why do women choose it for breast reconstruction after mastectomy?

Mr Dariush Nikkhah explains what breast reconstruction with DIEP (Deep Inferior Epigastric Perforator) flap surgery is, and how they perform a surgery where tissue from the abdomen is taken and shaped into a breast. It is a like-for-like reconstruction that is safe and is the gold standard for . Women choose DIEP flap surgery because it gives a natural feel, and unlike breast implants, it has less problems with revision.
