Today Is National No Smoking Day

Every year this day encourages smokers to think about stopping.

Over the last 24+ years, I’ve seen many people choose this moment as the day they finally stop.

Not because someone forced them.

But because they decided they were ready.

And when someone truly decides…

Change can happen surprisingly quickly.

One of the things that often helps people most is understanding what’s happening in their mind, because smoking is rarely just about ni****ne.

It’s about the mental patterns behind the habit.

Things like:

• Stress responses
• Habit loops
• Identity as “a smoker”
• Automatic thinking patterns

A Memory From The Smoking Ban In 2007

Back in 2007, when the UK smoking ban came into force, I was asked by ITV News to help one of their viewers stop smoking before the deadline.

It was during the build-up to UK Smoking Ban 2007.

There was a lot of public discussion at the time about smoking and habit change.

Helping that viewer succeed was a great reminder of something I’ve seen many times over the last 23+ years.

When someone really decides they’re ready to stop (anything), change can happen far quicker than they expect.

Smoking often feels like a powerful addiction.

But underneath it is usually a pattern the mind has learned.

Change the pattern, and the habit can lose its grip.

Clarity Begins Where Noise Ends.

In a world that rewards speed, urgency, and constant pressure…
calm can feel underrated.

But here’s the truth I see again and again working with clients:

A calm mind isn’t weakness.
It’s power.

Because when your mind is calm:

• You think more clearly
• You make better decisions
• Your confidence feels steady
• Your energy lasts longer
• Stress and anxiety lose their grip

Calm isn’t just something you need when life feels chaotic.

It’s something worth protecting and practising even when things are going well.

Too many people only try to slow down when they’re already overwhelmed.

But the most resilient people I work with do the opposite.

They build calm into their routine.

They pause.
They reset.
They give their mind space to breathe.

That might look like:

• stepping away from the noise
• taking a few quiet minutes to reset your thinking
• going for a walk
• breathing deeply and slowing your pace

This Card Is Over 15 Years Old

I came across these old stop smoking marketing cards recently.

They’re from more than 15 years ago.

At the time I was already helping people stop smoking using hypnosis and mindset techniques.

What’s interesting looking back now…

Many of the people I helped back then are still smoke-free today.

One message I received recently said:

“16 years ago you helped me stop smoking. Forever grateful.”

Messages like that mean a lot.

Because stopping smoking isn’t just about breaking a habit.

It’s about changing the direction of someone’s health and life long term.

Over the years I’ve helped people:

• Stop smoking
• Break other lifestyle habits
• Change patterns that were draining their energy and confidence

Smoking is just one example of how powerful habit change can be.

Why Smoking Isn’t Really About Ni****ne!

Following on from yesterday’s post about habits…

Smoking is one of the clearest examples of how powerful habit patterns can become.

Most smokers already know the health risks.

Most already know the cost.

Yet they still find themselves lighting up.

Why?

Because smoking isn’t just about ni****ne.

It’s a pattern the mind learns over time.

Coffee → cigarette
Driving → cigarette
Stress → cigarette
Break time → cigarette

Over the last 24+ years helping people change habits, I’ve noticed something interesting.

When someone stops smoking successfully, it’s rarely because they suddenly became stronger.

It’s because they escaped the smoking trap.

They changed the pattern behind the habit.

Health becomes a priceless bonus.

Saving money becomes a bonus too.

But the biggest thing people tell me they gain?

Freedom.

Freedom from needing that next cigarette.

Freedom from the mental negotiation.

Freedom from the habit controlling them.

Take The Shot

Watching my daughter’s netball match reminded me of this simple and powerful quote.

“You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.”

The players don’t score every time.
But they still take the shot.
Even after a miss.
They back themselves and go again.

And that’s the lesson.

In life, business, or anything that matters…
If you don’t take the shot, you’ve already decided the outcome.

Most people aren’t held back by failure.
They’re held back by the fear of failing.

So here’s today’s mindset shift:

Don’t wait for perfect timing.
Don’t wait until you feel ready.

Take the shot.
Back yourself.
Give it a go and see what happens.

Because progress doesn’t come from hesitation.
It comes from action.

The Problems People Don’t Post About…

People often ask me:

“What sort of things do your clients actually come to you for?”

So here’s a little glimpse inside my diary from this past week.

Because behind the polished profiles, busy lives and successful businesses…

there’s often a lot going on under the surface.

Over the last few days I’ve worked with people dealing with:

• Stress and anxiety – both work pressure and personal life overload
• Weight loss and lifestyle changes – wanting their energy, health and fitness back
• Confidence and self-esteem issues – capable people still second-guessing themselves
• Relationship challenges – including one situation impacted by p**n addiction
• Habit change – helping someone reduce their alcohol consumption
• Head noise – overthinking, self-doubt and mental clutter getting in the way

Alongside that, I’ve also been working with business owners and high-achieving professionals on something that shows up again and again…

Head SH*TE.

The internal noise that says things like:

“You’re not ready.”
“What if this goes wrong?”
“You’re not good enough yet.”

That kind of thinking quietly stops people enjoying the life they’ve worked so hard to build…
or stepping into their next level.

The work I do is about helping people:

clear the noise,
update the programming,
and move forward with more clarity and confidence.

Sometimes the change is professional.
Sometimes it’s personal.

Most of the time… it’s both.

Because when your Self, Habits, Identity, Thoughts and Energy are aligned, everything starts to feel easier.

You Don’t Rise to Your Goals. You Fall to Your Habits.

One of the most powerful parts of my Sort Your Head S.H.I.T.E Out™ framework is the H - Habits.

Because habits quietly shape your life far more than motivation ever will.
