We are currently welcoming new Trustees to join the Board at Highgate Counselling Centre.

HCC provides affordable, high-quality counselling to people who might otherwise struggle to access mental health support. Trustees play an important role in ensuring our work continues with care, integrity, and thoughtful oversight.

We are particularly interested in hearing from people with experience in fundraising or marketing. However, we welcome interest from anyone with a genuine commitment to mental health, including those considering their first trustee role.

If you would like to find out more, or would simply like an informal conversation about what the role involves, please contact us at admin@highgatecounselling.org.uk

Please feel free to share with someone who may be interested.

It can take real courage to reach out for counselling.

So when you finally do, and you’re told the service is full, the waiting list is closed, or the support is ending, it can feel deeply personal and incredibly disheartening.

But it isn’t a reflection of your worth. And it doesn’t mean help doesn’t exist.

Across the UK, many statutory and voluntary services are overwhelmed. Rising costs and limited resources mean even well-established services are struggling to meet demand. Being turned away is painful—but it’s a systemic issue, not a personal one.

There ARE still options.

In our latest blogpost, we share practical steps you can take if you’re looking for low cost counselling when services are full, including where to search, who to ask, and how to think about sustainability in therapy.

If you or someone you know is navigating this, we hope it offers both clarity and encouragement.

🧠 What is it like to train as a psychodynamic counsellor?

Training in psychodynamic counselling is more than a course or qualification, it’s an experience that invites curiosity, reflection, and personal growth. This piece, written by a trainee, shares the lived experience of training at Highgate Counselling Centre, exploring what it feels like to engage deeply with theory, self-understanding, and group learning.

It’s not about a checklist or credentials. It’s about encountering the work personally, being present with others, and noticing the changes that unfold as both trainee and counsellor.

If you’ve ever wondered what training feels like from the inside, this blog offers insight into the journey, the challenges, and the opportunities for growth.

✨Taking the first step into counselling often begins with questions rather than certainty.✨

The initial consultation is the first step to starting counselling at Highgate Counselling Centre. It is a space to talk about what has brought someone to seek help, and to consider whether psychodynamic counselling feels like the right way forward.

This blog explores what happens in that first meeting, how it differs from ongoing counselling, and why it matters. It reflects on the experience of coming for an initial consultation, the courage it can take, the wish to be heard, and the role of careful listening at the very beginning of the work.
Rather than offering solutions, the piece looks at how the consultation creates a space for understanding: of the difficulties someone brings, of what they may be hoping for, and of whether psychodynamic counselling can be helpful for them at this time.

💭Sometimes the hardest part of finding support isn’t reaching out — it’s knowing where to begin.

In our article The Quiet Gap, we reflect on how mental health support can exist quietly, while many people who need it don’t quite find their way there. It’s a gentle look at communication, access, and the small barriers that can make a big difference.
