5-year-old Lilia bursts into the room, filling it with energy and hugging everyone she meets at the surgical programme in Puebla, Mexico. 💫
Since we first shared Lilia’s story last year, she has continued to grow in confidence. Her experience is a reminder that with long-term care and support, children born with a cleft condition in already difficult circumstances can thrive.
Lilia had her first surgery to treat her cleft lip in 2021, when she was one year old, and her second surgery to treat her cleft palate in 2022. Alongside surgery, she was fitted with a feeding plate moulded to the roof of her mouth, helping her swallow properly and stay healthy in those crucial early months.
“Operation Smile was always there for us, not just for surgery but with speech therapy and psychosocial support,” Valeria recalls. “It was a beautiful experience. If I cry now, it’s from happiness.”
Since then, she has continued receiving comprehensive cleft care, including speech therapy, orthodontics and follow-up checks at our partner hospital that help her speak clearly, thrive at school and grow with confidence.
This week we’re marking 20 years since we began supporting patients like Lilia in Mexico, and we can’t wait to share more stories…
Meanwhile like this post to show your support for children like Lilia and her mum. ❤️
