The Faculty of Public Health (FPH) is the standard setting body for specialists in public health in the United Kingdom. FPH was established as a registered charity in 1972 following a central recommendation of the Royal Commission on Medical Education (1965-68). FPH is a joint faculty of the three Royal Colleges of Physicians of the United Kingdom (London, Edinburgh and Glasgow) and also a member of the World Federation of Public Health Associations. Although an integral part of the three Royal Colleges, FPH is an independently constituted body with its own membership, governance structure and financial arrangements. FPH is the professional home for more than 3,300 professionals working in public health. Our members come from a diverse range of professional backgrounds (including clinical, academic, policy) and are employed in a variety of settings, usually working at a strategic or specialist level. FPH is a strategic organisation and, as such, works collaboratively, drawing on the specialist skills, knowledge and experience of our members as well as building relationships with a wide range of external organisations. For more than 40 years, FPH has been at the forefront of the development and transformation of the public health profession.

If well planned and resourced, our system of childcare could help parents get work and radically improve the health of our children, writes Alice Woudhuysen in the upcoming edition of Public Health Today.

Public Health Today is the quarterly FPH magazine. It features a range of articles from topical news items, to in-depth interviews with key public health figures.

Each edition carries a special feature, with guest advisors who are prominent public health figures.

Global Violence Prevention is one of thirty two Special Interest Groups (SIGs) within the Faculty of Public Health.
http://www.fph.org.uk/current_special_interest_groups

Global Violence Prevention SIG aims to act as a forum for public health professionals who are interested in considering war and armed conflict in the context of the wider determinants of global health, and in taking a primary prevention approach to tackling their root causes. They engage in research, awareness-raising and advocacy work in a multidisciplinary network of like-minded individuals and organisations.

Global Violence Prevention SIG achieved a lot this year and they have a great plan for 2018. For example, they will be undertaking activities relating to its main UK workstreams –
radicalisation and military veteran health outcomes. They will be partnering with colleagues in Niger and the Philippines in order to analyse and publish data on the diverse health impacts of armed conflict. A wide variety of learning outcomes will be available from these projects.

Special Interest Groups are open to all FPH members.Would you like to join? Find out more http://www.fph.org.uk/special_interest_groups

We are dedicated to supporting Public Health Professionals throughout their career.

On 1st December we ran a one day course “Interview Skills for Public Health Consultant Posts”, with the aim of boosting the employment prospects of Public Health Consultants.

Our participants had the opportunity to reach a clear understanding of interview processes and who is usually involved. We clarified the expectations of interview panels and shared approaches to the typical interview questions that Public Consultants face. Along the way we practised interview techniques and through a mix of discussion and practice reinforced the confidence and ability of our course participants to respond to interviewers questions. This was followed by feedback and coaching. Our participants also had the opportunity to observe their fellow delegates in action, helping them further to identify the best techniques - and also what to avoid.

Attendees shared their thoughts on the course with us:

‘’Really good helpful day’’

‘’Tone was really good in inspiring confidence and positive feelings.’

We are pleased to share the exciting news with you!

In May 2017, FPH welcomed colleagues from the Kuwait Ministry of Health to London to discuss the possibility of supporting the development of their training programme for public health specialists.

In November a small FPH team visited Kuwait to undertake an intensive scoping exercise designed to assess the current position and identify opportunities for further development.

As a part of this exercise the FPH team met 40 individuals and undertook over 20 meetings with Departmental Directors and public health practitioners as well as other colleagues from the training and education sector in Kuwait. At the end of this visit FPH representatives presented initial findings and will be producing a further report to the Ministry of Health in the New Year.

We are very grateful for the fantastic response received to our initial call for engagement from our Fellows to assist in this particular project and would also like to use this opportunity to once again invite all FPH Fellows who wish to contribute to this programme as it further develops.
