This image took me right back to a homebirth I went to where the family dog spent the whole early labour at the threshold of the door.

I knew my client was getting ready to have her baby when the dog got up ears pricked and sniffing moving slowly towards her and curling up on a cushion close by.

So many clients of mine have commented that when they are in labour they want their animal close by to stroke as they find it so nurturing.

Would choose your pet as a birth partner?

5 years ago today I was in labour. After a peaceful blissful pregnancy my waters broke and she made her way into this world. I was recently reminded by that i saw the world differently through this pregnancy- everything had more colour and I finally felt at home in myself.

People often tell me I’m abit of a freak because I absolutely loved the labour. It was increadibly hard and pushed me to the edge of what I thought my body could do … but I have never felt so proud, grounded and aligned. I am so chuffed that we were able to birth her at home free from stress, random people and hospital 🦠.

Some memories that will always stay with me….
- whaling like a banshee without a care of who heard
- the dark stillness of the bathroom
- thinking I was at a party high on the gas, dancing to 90s r&b
- asking very frank questions about my bum hole
- soothing presence of …even when she took my gas away
- solid reassurance from
- tenderness from my sister who I felt deeply bonded to as she coached me through pushing my baby out as I had done for her
- the disbelief that she was finally here - our little pud all squidgy and swollen.

Happy birthday darling Pia my eternal gift and twin flame ❤️

‘This festival will bond our community giving insight into subjects you perhaps had not thought much about and support people to feel less alone in the experiences and feelings and share some incredible resources and services. Normalising the challenges we face and seizing them as opportunities for growth rather than slipping into victim mentality.’

Meet Mark …. One of the most forgotten people in pregnancy birth and parenthood can be the fathers or non-gestational parents. A lot of mental health services and support are geared towards mothers but will 22% of fathers experiencing anxiety and depression in the perinatal period it is high time that we start considering them more.

Like so many of our speakers Mark’s passion for his work came from his own experience of mental health problems and he shared his 20 years of experience of working with families and raising awareness for fathers mental health. In this talk we discussed the stigma men have in regards to acknowledging and speaking up about their mental health, particularly with the heightened responsibility and pressure to keep it together while caring for their new family. Mark shared the common challenges men face in regards to personal and cultural expectations, access to services and the long term impact a fathers mental health can have on their children.

This is a must watch for all. Often women or those closest to a person struggling can be the ones that identify and mirror back changes in someone’s mental health. If people are more aware they can start to create safe environments for honest open communication so that the person in need feels they are heard and can trust the support offered to them.

Meet Emma… Possibly one of the most unspoken aspects of womens health is pelvic floor dysfunction. Shrouded in taboo and shame and a recommendation to “ grin and bare it” or “just get on” it seems everyone can be to shy to talk about incontinence and vulval pain which can be so common after having a baby.

These conditions don’t just have a physical impact but can deeply effect self confidence, body image and emotional wellbeing.

Together Emma and I explore why women are in this sorry state of shame and what we can do to get out of it. Emma gives an insight in having a proactive approach in pregnancy rather than a reactive one post birth and give tips on how women can care for themselves and reach out for help. Although pelvic dysfunction can sometimes be inevitable after having a baby vaginally or via Cesarean it certainly does not have to be a life sentence.

This is a really important talk to listen to if you are pregnant or if you feel like your body is not the same after having your baby.

Meet Sam… Parenting can be such a minefield. It can be a real challenge to know which parenting style is right for you and your child. It can be filled with challenging emotions, self-doubt whilst still being a progressive rewarding experience.

Coaching offers the opportunity for pregnant people and parents to check in with themselves, become aware of how they would like to parent and what they want for their family. Through self-awareness and evaluating what is working well and what isn’t, engaging with a coach can support parents to have more self-compassion, curiosity and be more emotionally available for their children.

Samantha shares her insights from her education background on how building confidence, communication and emotional intelligence in children and parents can support the whole family unit. Sam explains what coaching is, how it works, and offers a very convincing case as to why every person would benefit from coaching.

Together we explored topics around parenting expectation, judgement, comparison, understanding strong emotions, different parenting styles, confidence building and communication.

This talk is great for you to watch if you are curious to find out how you can be the best parent and enjoy it. How you can leave behind unhelpful judgements and expectations, become more present and simply enjoy life as a parent more. If you are intrigued to discover different parenting strategies and consider the “right way” for you to parent, this is the one to watch.

Meet AJ…. Stigma and shame is rife in the LGBTQ+ community as they are trying to inch their way into a system that was designed for a stereotypical family set up - women and men. In this insightful conversation AJ shares the challenges and prejudice the q***r community face.

Mental and emotional challenges are common. Lack of understanding and inclusivity are stopping trans and q***r families accessing the care that they deserve and need. We are sharing this talk with you to raise awareness of the struggles of our fellow humans and to make a stand to say we hear you and are here for you.

There is nothing more brave to step out of the norm. If we stand as one community change will come.

This is a must watch for all but especially anyone working in healthcare or offering community services for pregnant and new families.

Meet Diahann.. This talk offers an original perspective on how we navigate parenthood and reclaiming our power. Diahann reflects on her own mothering journey and explores how we can choose to parent in a way that is including our children and benefits our own wellbeing.

There is so much unknown through this time, but this is an initiation into tapping into the mystery of life, reclaiming our innate knowing and creating a vision for the future that aligns with who we are and what we need. There is power in looking into the meaning we are placing in our experiences and searching for new ways to think and be so we are not losing ourselves in the process.

Diahann shares some beautiful practices for holding presence, creating a dream vision and being compassionate to ourselves so that we can honour ourselves and our children leaving guilt and resentment behind us.

This is a great conversation to listen to if you are finding parenting challenging and would like to validate how you are feeing whilst reinforcing your trust that everything is happening in the way it is meant to for your own growth.

Meet Kate … Menopause feel like quite a topical subject but how many of you have considered that it may just be round the corner or that you are muddling your way through it now? It is another fairly unspoken phase of a women’s life that often there is little information or support on particularly when you consider how you are supposed to go through this massive shift whilst still being the cornerstone of the family unit.

Kate has said herself that she messily rolled from postnatal to early menopause and in this talk we explored the similarities in birth and menopause as a rite of passage that we can soften into and surrender into the power of what is. There are so many expectations of women from society and of ourselves to be the high functioning all seeing all doing people which actually can go against what we need and what our bodies are calling for.

In a period of life where time feels short Kate shares her wisdom in preparing for your second spring, rage, attachment, self-awareness and consciously claiming space for yourself.

This is one to watch for all women no matter what age. The more insight you have now on how you can nurture yourself, the easier this transition and rebirth will be.

Meet Erin … After her own challenging experience of birth Erin found her passion for educating other parents to be to take responsibility and control of their birth experience through hypnobirthing and antenatal education. We explored the multitude of techniques that can be applied to hypnobirthing not just hypnosis and looked at how it can be used at it best to create an experience that you feel positive about.

After spending a lot of her time in education- Erin found herself in prime position to take an active role in service development through the maternity voices’ partnership. MV is a team dedicated to developing maternity care taking into consideration service users experiences, creating lasting change and improvements. We looked at the common challenges people are facing and what the service is doing to adapt and change to meet family’s needs better.

This is one to watch if you want some inspiration on planning for birth, learn some resources you can tap up to explore your options and current research and gain insight in how maternity services are adapting and growing with the help of the maternity voices partnership.
