Nancy and Aidan are experienced teachers of paediatric osteopathy at postgraduate level.

Here's a question I often get asked and one I have to clarify when I'm talking to groups of other professionals or patients because there is an assumption that the two terms are synonymous. So here it is.

"Cranial osteopath" is a term which some use when they have studied and prefer to work with cranial techniques. This group of techniques use less force than some others so they are often used with children and are sometimes preferred by adult patients. The word 'cranial' may make you think that the osteopath only works on the head but it's actually a set of techniques which can be applied to any area of the body (yes, this can be confusing). This is why I prefer to refer to myself as an osteopath who uses cranial techniques rather than a cranial osteopath.

I more commonly call myself a paediatric osteopath. In my case it does not mean that I don't treat adults but that I have undertaken significant postgraduate clinical training in paediatrics. Babies and children have a different structure to their bodies, you only have to look at the picture above to see that the shape, size, proportions and number of parts to the skull are different in babies and adults. Children also have different physiology so respond and react differently to trauma, illness and therapeutic intervention. To add to the complexity of working with small bodies, they are constantly changing and developing new fuctions so my assessment and expectation of 'normal' has to reflect this.

So this means that not all cranial osteopaths are paediatric osteopaths and not all paediatric osteopaths are cranial osteopaths. So if you are looking for an osteopath to treat your child it might be useful to explore their training and experience in the field of paediatrics. If you've been recommended to try the cranial approach, then this too is a separate postgraduate area of study.

My own career is shaped by my passion for understanding complex paediatric patients and helping other osteopaths to explore the intricacies and challenges involved when working with children, especially those children who are unable to communicate verbally so require skilled, listening hands to understand their needs

As we move into the next lockdown, our clinic will remain open for those who need us. At the start of the first lockdown we changed the way we work to reduce, where possible, the risk of transmission of this virus and we continue to work in this way, reviewing it as new evidence and guidelines arise: https://nunheadosteopaths.co.uk/covid-19/
