Chiswick Residents Are Big Fans of Chinese New Year
Residents at The Chiswick Nursing Centre learned a lot about Chinese culture and the Year of the Horse when they were visited by Ava Li and Jessie.

Everyone was handed a vibrant coloured fan and shown how to shake it open to make a noise. They were taken through a few gentle moves (good for manual dexterity) before the troupe performed a dance in celebration of the Year of the (Fire) Horse. Those born under this sign are said to be confident, energetic and independent but dislike being reined in!

Our audience was enraptured by the delicate movements, the striking costumes and the enigmatic smiles of the dancers.

Chinese New Year 2026 began on 17 February and celebrations can last up to 16 days.

We can always find a good excuse for a party at The Chiswick Nursing Centre and a post-Valentine’s celebration was just the job.

There was vintage music provided by ‘Lipstick on Your Collar’ who sang everything from Elvis to Abba, finishing up with ‘Sweet Caroline’. The finale had all of us with our hands in the air – and one resident dancing, as she had done throughout the entire performance.

Everyone was impressed by the singer, not only for her voice and energy, but because she had taken the trouble to go round and personally greet every resident before she started singing.

Mocktails, complete with paper parasols, added to the party atmosphere and there were love heart sweets for everyone to enjoy, which they certainly did!.

Valentine’s Day itself had not gone unobserved. Cards circulated and residents took part in a cake decorating session where cupcakes were suitably decorated with hearts and a lot of love.

It was a busy day at The Chiswick Nursing Centre when Ally, Will, Ed, Mortician and Gomez, escorted by Sally, arrived for a visit.

They were not friends or relatives they were slightly more unusual than that. Ally, Will and Ed are Ackie Monitor Lizards and Mortician and Gomez, Carpet Pythons. Sally helps to look after them at Darwin’s Kingdom, a wildlife educational charity which has brought a wide variety of reptiles and other creatures to us on a number of occasions.

Snakes often engender an initial fear factor but once residents plucked up the courage to touch them, they were entranced by their warmth and smoothness. The snakes soon coiled themselves around arms and wheelchairs.

The Ackie Monitor Lizards, which are Australian natives, were accompanied by some smaller Geckos. These also proved very popular.

Sally, who has a passion for animal behaviour, was brilliant, taking time to explain about the origins, lifestyles, habits and characteristics of all of these fascinating reptiles.

Animals always seem to have a soothing effect on people, which is one of the reasons that we are always happy to welcome back Darwin’s Kingdom to The Chiswick.

Chiswick’s Burns Celebration was a toe-tapping, heart-warming affair led by none other than George the piper – a man with royal credentials. George once played the bagpipes for the late Queen Elizabeth II prior to her 90th birthday tea, and he brought that same regal flair to our festivities.

The afternoon kicked off with stirring renditions of The Bonnie Banks o’ Loch Lomond, the Scottish melodies echoing through the building. The sound sparked smiles and memories, especially for one resident and their loved one, who fondly reminisced about trips to Scotland and the Highlands.

Hands were soon clapping and toes tapping as George launched into The Dashing White Sergeant, before rounding off with the most famous Burns poem of all – Auld Lang Syne. And just when you thought the fun was over, residents danced along to one of their favourite rock n’ roll artists, Elvis.

The afternoon ended on a perfectly Scottish note with a wee dram and some delicious shortbread – the ideal finish to a truly bonnie celebration.

Residents at The Chiswick Nursing Centre are having a whale of a time playing indoor ball games.

The specially adapted sessions include volleyball, skittles and table tennis. The games are proving to be excellent exercise for maintaining dexterity and co-ordination, improving mobility, getting the blood pumping and keeping minds alert.

Those taking part are simply loving it as the smiles on their faces demonstrate. What’s more, no-one shows the least sign of having lost their competitive edge.

The Windsor Suite's conservatory was full of smiles and chatter as we hosted a special tasting event for residents, relatives, and members of our care team. Plates were filled with nourishing meals crafted to delight every sense.

From comforting fish pie and vegetable curry to locally sourced vegetables, every dish was designed with care. Sweet treats like blackberry crumble, chocolate eclairs, madeira cake and soft fruits added a delicious finale.

With Apetito enhancing our catering offering, residents can look forward to meals that are both nutritious and irresistible.

We Care @ C.N.C.’ is a message that sums up our approach at The Chiswick Nursing Centre and aptly describes what we do. It is a sentiment that extends not only to our residents but also to our hard-working staff. This message was also printed on small gifts for some employees to help celebrate Nursing Support Workers Day.

Team members received a cosy beanie hat to help them stay warm on their journeys to and from the Centre during these chilly winter mornings and evenings. To accompany the beanies, there was also a key-ring fob with a mini torch featuring the C.N.C. logo, designed to help light the way or make it easier to find keys.

Nursing Support Workers Day on 23 November is an NHS initiative to recognise and thank a wide range of often unsung healthcare workers. These include healthcare assistants, healthcare support workers, assistant practitioners, maternity support workers and nursing assistants. Their work may sometimes go unseen, but their contribution across the NHS and beyond is vital.

Our special thanks go to those who work here at The Chiswick and keep the wheels of care turning so smoothly. We hope these small gestures help keep them warm and, quite literally, bring a little extra light into their (and our) lives.

The atrium to the Chiswick Nursing Home’s Kensington Suite was turned into a near-perfect concert venue for a classical performance from two budding musical stars.

Pianist, Mar (Maria) Umbert Kimura, who studies at the Royal College of Music and violinist, Lewis Lee, from the Guildhall School of Music, held our audience spellbound with a beautiful recital.

The Chiswick’s newly-tuned piano was waiting for Mar as, together with Lewis, they performed a programme of works from Elgar, Massenet and Kreisler. One resident was so moved that she said ‘it brought tears to her eyes’. Residents, family members, friends and staff enjoyed it so much, they hope the young pair will return soon.

Mar and Lewis perform together regularly on the classical music circuit. Mar is already the recipient of The Davison Young Musician Award 2024 and Lewis, a keen chamber music performer, also has a number of awards under his belt. Both promise much for the future. We wish them every success with their continuing studies and look forward to welcoming them back in the not too distant future.

Lateef Does Our Buckingham Suite Proud.
Health Care Assistant, Lateef Fashola can be relied upon to always do his best for residents on our Buckingham Suite. His hardworking, dedicated approach to care has not gone unnoticed by his colleagues who nominated him for September’s Employee of the Month award.

Lateef, who has been with us for almost three years, always goes about his work with a smile on his face. His colleagues also highlighted his passion for the job, being friendly and helpful, always on time, polite, professional and a real team player.

What more could our residents and staff wish for? Well done Lateef.

Our residents have been getting into the Halloween spirit during this week’s arts and crafts session, which was transformed into a celebration of all things autumn! Together, we decorated pumpkins and painted bats and cats, filling the room with creativity and seasonal cheer.

A special thank you goes to the relative of one of our residents, who kindly provided the pumpkins — lovingly grown in South London. Your thoughtful contribution made our activity extra special and truly helped set the scene for a wonderfully spooky season!

When we look good, we feel better. And when we feel better, we want to look good. This might explain why one of our visiting hairdressers, Victoria, is kept busy when she comes to The Chiswick on a Thursday.
She tends to clients in our fully equipped, on-site hairdressing salon. It means that residents don’t have far to go to look a million dollars and they don’t have to wrestle with the elements afterwards.
It is strange to think that something as simple as having one’s hair done can dramatically affect how we feel about ourselves but it works, every time.

Well Done Gerard
Our brilliant staff continue to impress by going above and beyond their job spec to win our Employee of the Month award.
Gerard Rodrigo is one such individual. He works as a Health Care Assistant on our Kensington Suite where residents are often younger adults who require the highest standard of specialist nursing care for complex needs. These span traumatic or acquired brain injury, early onset Parkinson’s, stroke, multiple sclerosis or Huntingdon’s disease.
This suite also offers long term rehabilitation alongside maintenance physiotherapy and occupational therapy programmes. Staff are well versed in the management of specialist feeding systems, nutritional needs and inputs, complex continence care, bariatric care and diabetes management.
As a Health Care Assistant, Gerard works alongside our nursing and other medical staff providing invaluable support that enables others to carry out the more specialist procedures. His colleagues, as well as residents, nominated him for this award citing a long list of positive attributes including his passion for the job, his caring attitude, helpfulness, energy, patience, professionalism, excellent timekeeping and being a good team player.
Well done Gerard. You are a credit to the Kensington Suite and to CNC.
Gerard is pictured receiving his award from our Centre Director, Dev Lallchand
