In this eight and final instalment of the TED (Tired–Exercise–Diet) Series, we turn to the neurobiology of food and drink, how what we consume shapes emotional regulation, cognitive performance, and overall mental health. Food is not merely fuel; it is information - biochemical data moving continuously from gut to brain and back again, influencing motivation, focus, mood, and even how we learn and relate....

In this seventh instalment of the TED (Tired–Exercise–Diet) Series, we explore the neuroscience of physical exercise and its central role in emotional regulation, cognitive function, and mental health. Within the NA-CBT framework, Exercise represents the “E” in TED — the second pillar of biological stability upon which self-regulation psychological flexibility depend. This chapter provides practical guidance for integrating physical and relaxation training, circadian rhythm alignment, and behavioural activation interventions into therapeutic practice.

In this sixth instalment of the TED (Tired–Exercise–Diet) Series, we explore the neuroscience of sleep and its central role in emotional regulation, cognitive function, and mental health. Sleep is not a passive state but a dynamic neurobiological process that restores metabolic balance, consolidates memory, and recalibrates affective and cognitive circuitry. Drawing on advances in neuroscience, psychoneuroendocrinology, and affective regulation, this article outlines how sleep deprivation disrupts the amygdala–prefrontal network, alters neurotransmitter systems, and amplifies emotional reactivity....

In this fifth instalment of TED (Tired–Exercise–Diet) series, of the NeuroAffective-CBT® project, we explore the multifaceted role of Vitamin C in mental health. Emerging evidence suggests optimal neurocognitive benefits occur at daily intakes of 200–500 mg. Beyond its reputation as an immune booster, Vitamin C functions as a key modulator of neurotransmitter synthesis, oxidative stress, and immune–brain communication....

In this fourth instalment of the TED (Tired–Exercise–Diet) Series, we explore magnesium — an essential mineral often overlooked in discussions of mood, stress, and emotional regulation. Drawing from neuroscience, nutritional psychiatry, and the NeuroAffective-CBT® framework, this article examines how magnesium supports brain function, sleep, and affective stability....

🧠 TED Series, Part III: Omega-3 and Mental Health
In this new instalment of the TED (Tired–Exercise–Diet) Series, we explore how Omega-3 fatty acids, particularly EPA and DHA, influence mood, cognition, and emotional balance.
Drawing on neuroscience, nutritional psychiatry, and the NeuroAffective-CBT® framework, the article highlights how dietary fats do more than protect the heart — they also nourish the mind.
It offers clinicians and readers practical TED strategies for integrating Omega-3s into therapy and everyday life.

New Research Findings and NeuroAffective-CBT® Implications In this third instalment of the TED (Tired–Exercise–Diet) Series, we explore how omega-3 fatty acids, particularly EPA and DHA, influence …

Introducing TED (Tired-Exercise-Diet) in the NeuroAffective-CBT® Framework, part lll. TED integrates neuroscience (gut–brain signalling, reward pathways), nutritional psychiatry, psychophysiology (sleep deprivation), and behavioural science (habit formation, conditioning). Framing these domains, sleep, movement, diet, under TED provides clinicians and clients with a flexible, evidence-informed scaffold for lifestyle-oriented intervention. TED is more than theory! Daniel Mirea presents it in NeuroAffective-CBT® publications, including the “Tired, Exercise and Diet Your Way Out of Trouble” article, where TED is portrayed as a core pillar in the NA-CBT schema linking body, brain, and affect (Mirea, 2023; Mirea, 2025). Article below..

Empirical evidence shows that improving sleep, increasing physical activity, and enhancing diet quality yield synergistic benefits for emotion regulation, reduction of maladaptive cravings, and improvement of self-esteem.

In this first instalment of the TED (Tired-Exercise-Diet) series, we explore the intriguing possibility that creatine supplementation, long associated with sports performance, might also play a role in emotional health, especially in disorders rooted in shame, self-criticism, and affect regulation. Introducing TED in the NeuroAffective-CBT® Framework (Mirea’s Contribution) The TED model synthesises insights from neuroscience (e.g., gut–brain signalling, reward pathways), nutritional psychiatry, psychophysiology (for example, sleep deprivation), and behavioural science (habit formation, conditioning)....

Why do some foods feel irresistible, while others barely tempt you? It is tempting to think cravings are just about taste, sweet, salty, sour, bitter, but the truth runs much deeper. Your brain and gut are in constant conversation, sending signals that shape not only what you like to eat, but what you…...

NA-CBT... the new CBT therapy

I am an accredited CBT Psychotherapist, a writer, senior lecturer and clinical supervisor who trained and also trains in different cognitive and behavioural approaches including traditional CBT, Compassion Focused Therapy, Cognitive-Behavioural Hypnosis, EMDR, Schema Therapy, Mindfulness (MBCT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), ACT or Neuroaffective-CBT (NA-CBT). With a career spanning over almost 30 years in the mental health field, I dotted many 'i's and crossed many 't's in mental health, forensic and substance misuse clinics as a clinical head, clinical supervisor or just psychotherapist. I have always felt drawn towards complex cases of low self-esteem and childhood trauma but also at the other end of the spectrum by the prospect of enhancing performance and abilities through a positive mindset. As such, over the years I developed my own behavioural approaches.. Neuroaffective-CBT mostly for chronic negative emotions, Emotion-Focused CBT for interpersonal/relationship problems and Sports-CBT for enhancing performance in sports. I would like to invite you to follow my articles on NA-CBT on the link below...
