Eating.More.Safely (ems) was born from fear and frustration as parents of a child who can’t yet communicate her allergies.

When our daughter started nursery, anxiety hit: What if a new staff member didn’t know? What if early symptoms were missed? What if someone simply forgot?

Our dream is when someone sees an ems clip product, they instantly know that a child has a food allergy.

We took our two-year-old daughter to London this weekend and honestly… it was far more stressful than it should have been.

We were so excited to show her the city - the lights, the buses, the museums - but something as basic as finding her a safe meal turned into an exhausting challenge.

Our little girl has food allergies, so we always ask about ingredients and cross contamination. One place flat out told us they couldn’t serve her because of cross contamination risk. I appreciate the honesty - truly - but it was still heartbreaking to hear “no” when your toddler is hungry.

Three other places had nothing on the menu that was egg and dairy free. Not one suitable option. Another restaurant couldn’t tell us what allergens were in their food at all. And one place - after we explained her allergies, offered her a cheese pastry.

A cheese pastry.

I don’t think people realise how isolating and scary this can feel as a parent. It’s not about being fussy. It’s not a preference. It’s safety. It’s sitting there watching your child ask for food while you’re scanning menus and calculating risk.

Have you been given an allergy action plan?
If your child has been diagnosed with an allergy, this is an essential document you should receive from your healthcare provider. An allergy action plan clearly explains what your child is allergic to, the signs of a reaction, and exactly what to do in an emergency.

It’s incredibly useful for nurseries, schools, childminders, and even when travelling or flying. Anywhere your child is in someone else’s care, this plan should go with them.

We keep ours printed and stored in an easy-to-access place, but we also have a PDF version ready to share. That way, anyone caring for our daughter has a copy - including family members. It gives everyone confidence and peace of mind, and most importantly, helps keep her safe.

If you haven’t been given one, it’s worth asking your GP or allergy specialist. It’s such a simple step that makes a huge difference.

Starting nursery is a huge milestone and it can feel incredibly overwhelming for both parent and child. Add a medical condition like food allergies into the mix, and suddenly the worries multiply.

What if someone forgets about their allergies? What if it’s not taken seriously? What if they accidentally get hold of food they can’t have?

When your child’s safety depends on constant vigilance, handing over that responsibility to someone else is daunting.

Starting nursery was actually the biggest driving force behind creating ems clip. We were desperate for peace of mind - for something that would help communicate our baby’s allergies clearly and consistently, even when we weren’t there to do it ourselves.

We can’t control everything. But we can put the right tools in place to help keep our little ones as safe as possible when they’re out in the world.

Stay tuned for part 2!!

Since our daughter started wearing her eating.more.safely ‘ems’ allergy bib when we eat out, something has shifted. Staff notice it straight away. They ask thoughtful questions. They double-check ingredients without me having to push. There’s less awkwardness and more genuine care.

It’s not about drawing attention - it’s about clear communication. The bib makes it visible, and that visibility has made a real difference. Instead of feeling like a burden, we feel heard. And that changes everything.

To anyone navigating food allergies: you deserve to feel safe, respected, and taken seriously every single time you sit down at a table.

When we first started weaning, it felt like everything triggered a reaction. The list seemed never-ending - tomatoes, bananas, strawberries, apples, soy, lupin, milk, egg, peanut, hazelnut, peppers… and more.

We were advised to keep offering certain foods as long as her reactions weren’t affecting her breathing or causing severe tummy pain. But that’s much easier said than done when your baby’s entire face turns red, blotchy and itchy, looking painfully sore. Children are incredibly resilient, but would any of us want to spend our day feeling like that?

We had to find a balance between following the guidance and trusting our instincts as parents. Slowly, around 13 months, her reactions began to lessen with some foods.

Eventually, we were able to get a skin prick test, which finally gave us some answers and a better understanding of her allergies.

It’s been a journey - one filled with worry, learning, and a lot of label-reading, but also with resilience and progress.

We’re honestly shocked.

We’ve created products designed to help keep allergy children safe… yet we’re being told we can’t tell allergy families we exist.

Let that sink in.

We’ve approached the very places parents naturally turn to for support and guidance:

Doctors’ surgeries – NO
Schools – NO
Nurseries – NO
Libraries – NO
Allergy charities – NO

Over and over again, the same answer:
“We can’t advertise private businesses.”

We understand policies. We respect boundaries.

But how are allergy parents supposed to find us if we’re not allowed to tell them we’re here?

We’re not selling toys.
We’re not promoting something trivial.
We’re trying to help families keep their little ones safe.

And being shut out of every trusted community space feels incredibly disheartening.

The frustration is real. Very real.

But here’s what’s even more real:
Our determination.

Because allergy families deserve to know there are products out there designed with their children in mind.

So we will keep going.
We will keep speaking up.
And we will make sure parents know there are eating.more.safely products out there to help protect their babies.

If you believe families should know about tools that help keep children safe, help us spread the word.
