馃憸Don't let your bag get you down!馃憸
Ever wonder why you seem to have pain on one side of your neck and one shoulder? This is probably a likely culprit! Carrying your bag on one side forces you to lean in order to maintain your centre of gravity (see skeleton and look at the angle of the joints in the neck and upper back). This is "ok" for occasional short periods but if you're doing it every day you will start to cause stress on the shoulder and neck leading to neck pain, headaches, shoulder pain, reduced neck and shoulder mobility as well as possible rotator cuff issues. You will also end up looking like the bottom left picture as your shoulder has morphed into an Olympic level bag carrying hook! This is true regardless of whether your bag is on your shoulder or in your hand, whether it is louisvuitton or gucci. The best thing to do is use a backpack (some designers are making good looking ones although not the best ergonomically), if you still insist on using an over the shroulder bag at least put it across your body and try and keep it as light as possible!

Repeat after me: "An injury is not a random event!" Flash back to last week and taking two injury prevention workshops with the lovely ladies (and gents) at !
There was a lot to absorb over
40 minutes but those cores should be getting a lot stronger and proprioceptors a lot sharper! It was great to speak to some of you afterwards and help with individual issues and also hear that the GP's who attended got some good takeaways as well! Interprofessional collaboration is the way forward!

For those of you who are interested the exercises we ran through were:
1) psoas lunge
2) thoracic mobility
3) cat cow
4) stork balance
5) hip airplanes
6) quadraped/bird dog
7) plank
8) side plank/bridge
9) McGill curl-up

One of the best things about attending an event like is getting to talk to so many people who are enthusiastic about their health and being able to help them get a better understanding of what chiropractic can do for them.
Some have an issue they have been concerned about for a while, others want to know how they can perform better and look after themselves more effectively. Either way they all want to improve.
My favourite part is by day two or three once the news gets out that there's a chiropractor in the building and the event staff start turning up en mass saying " I heard there is a chiropractor...."! 馃榾

馃弸 Love your morning work out? 馃弮 Perfect! Just remember to give yourself an hour after getting out of bed before you start any exercise or stretching.
The discs in your spine inflate with fluid overnight as you lie down due to the compressive load of standing or sitting being removed. This means they are much less adaptable upon rising from bed and more susceptible to injury. The good news is the discs will lose 90% of that fluid within the first hour of getting up becoming very close to the level they will work at for the rest of the day.

Particularly relevant when we see 37% of 20 year olds displaying signs of disc degeneration and 30% showing non-painful disc protrusions on MRI. These are not painful findings but are dysfunctional which is wear and tear ultimately creating impeded biomechanics and increasing the risk of further injury.

Very proud to be included on the line up for 2018! Come and join me to workshop 45 minutes of injury prevention strategies and knowledge! As well as two injury prevention workshops I'll also be doing posture scans and spinal checks throughout the 3 days 4-6th of May.

馃敪 Do you recognise this picture? 馃敪It's Friday tomorrow and a lot of people will be sitting like this after a hard week of work. Take a moment though and look at how this person is sitting. Do you see the curved back? The rounded shoulders? The head pointing down and the head protruding waaay out infront of the body?

This guys is is going to be suffering with back ache, neck pain, headaches and more if he keeps this up.

Try and stand up every 30 minutes. Just for the length of a 2 minute phone call or a walk to the water cooler and back or better yet don't just send that email, walk up that one flight of stairs between you and the person you want to communicate with and talk to them! Move around and let those stretched out tissues in your back contract a little and those compressed muscles and joints at the front stretch out a bit. It will save you a lot of problems! Our bodies are not designed to stay in one position for 8hrs a day 5 days a week. Oh hold on, looks a bit like how you look at your phone too doesn't it. How often do you do that...
