Thinking about using eyelash serums?

Some formulas (especially those with prostaglandin analogs) can come with real eye-health risks:

-Iris color changes: Rare, but lighter eyes can develop permanent brown pigment.

-Eyelid darkening: Increased melanin can leave the lids or lash line looking darker—even after stopping.

-Redness & irritation: Burning, stinging or chronic redness can show up with regular use.

-Misdirected eyelashes: Lashes may grow too long, curl oddly or point in the wrong direction.

-Skin discoloration: Surrounding skin can darken or look bruised.

-Increased sensitivity: Watery eyes, itching or contact lens discomfort can happen.

-Allergic reactions: Swelling, rash, or intense itchiness around the lids.

-Changes in eye pressure: These ingredients were originally used for glaucoma treatment.

-Rebound shedding: Lashes often return to normal or shed unevenly when you stop.

Always know what’s in your serum and use with care. Consult our experts for more advance on risks of eye lash serums use and whether you are likely to be impacted!

Is the cold wind making your eyes water? Are you constantly dabbing your eyes?

If your eyes start watering when the wind blows, it doesn’t always mean there’s a tear duct blockage. In fact, it could be the opposite, they could be dry!

Sometimes, when the surface of your eyes is too dry, they become extra sensitive to environmental changes like wind or dust. This triggers a reflex response — your eyes produce more tears to protect and re-lubricate themselves.

Keep your eyes comfortable by using regular lubricating drops, wearing protective eyewear outdoors and avoiding excessive screen time that can dry them out.

Watery eyes can be a sign your eyes are working extra hard to defend themselves — maybe they are dry and need assistance!

For more information or support and for a thorough assessment of the ocular surface, please call us on 020 7636 6080/ 07562 691243.

Dry Eyes or Allergies or Both?

Many people experience eye irritation, redness, or watering and assume it’s allergies but it may actually be Dry Eye Disease. Although the symptoms can overlap, the causes and treatments are quite different.

Dry Eye Disease occurs when the eyes don’t produce enough tears or when the tears evaporate too quickly due to poor tear film quality. Common symptoms include burning, a sandy or gritty sensation, light sensitivity and vision that fluctuates throughout the day.

Allergic Conjunctivitis, on the other hand, is caused by an immune response to allergens such as pollen, pet dander, or dust. It typically leads to intense itching, swelling, redness and watery discharge.

Treatments differ significantly: Dry Eye often requires tear supplementation, lipid support or anti-inflammatory therapy, while allergies are best managed with allergy-specific drops. It is also possible to have both at the same time!

If your symptoms persist or worsen, an examination with one of our Dry eye specialists, can help determine the true cause and guide the most effective treatment plan.

Manuka honey has been increasingly studied for its potential benefits in Dry Eye disease. This type of honey can soothe Dry Eyes by fighting bacteria, reducing inflammation and retaining tears.

Fights Bacteria:

-Manuka honey kills bacteria and breaks down eyelid biofilm.
-This helps clean the eyelid margins and improve meibomian gland function, which keeps your tears from evaporating too fast.

Reduces Inflammation:

-It calms irritation and swelling on the eye surface, easing redness and burning.

Improves Tear Film Stability:

-Healthier oil glands mean a stronger tear film, so eyes stay moist longer.

Medical-grade Manuka honey eye drops (like Optimel) have been shown to reduce dryness, improve tear quality, and lower bacteria on the eyelids.

Sleeping Comfortably with Dry Eyes

Sleeping with Dry Eye can be uncomfortable and affect the quality of your rest. Try these simple steps to ease discomfort and enjoy a better night’s sleep:

• Stay hydrated and limit caffeine

Drinking enough water throughout the day helps your body maintain moisture levels, including in your eyes. Reducing caffeine intake or stopping intake by after mid afternoon, can also help prevent eye twitching and make it easier to fall asleep.

• Use a humidifier in your bedroom

A humidifier adds moisture to the air, which can be especially helpful during colder months when heating systems dry out your environment. This extra humidity can ease Dry Eye symptoms and keep your eyes more comfortable overnight.

• Apply a warm compress before bed or use a Blephasteam mask

A warm/ wet compress provides soothing relief while helping to open the meibomian glands, which improve oil gland function and stabilize the tear film. This can reduce tear evaporation and relieve Dry Eye discomfort as you sleep.

•Use a thicker lubricant drop/ gel before you sleep

This helps to prevent evaporation of tears if you sleep with your eyes partially open and helps lubricate the eye surface overnight

If you notice your Dry Eye symptoms worsening at night or you’re struggling to sleep comfortably, call us on 020 7636 6080/ 07562 691243 to speak with one of our Specialist Optometrists — we’re here to help.

Thinking about starting Roaccutane for acne? Get a Dry eye baseline assessment first!

Roaccutane (isotretinoin) can sometimes cause permanent Dry Eye by disrupting your natural tear balance and dry up the meibominan glands. This may leave your eyes feeling dry, irritated, or uncomfortable longer term. To protect your eye health, consider a dry eye baseline assessment before treatment, to pre-empt any dry eyes that may occur whilst taking this medication. We have found even taking the medication for a six month period can really impact the eyes.

For more advice on this, please book an appointment with one of our Dry Eye specialists today - 020 7636 6080/07562 691243.

As autumn arrives and temperatures drop, Dry Eye symptoms may become more noticeable. Changes in weather, increased time indoors, central heating and reduced moisture in the air can all contribute to flare-ups.

To help manage your symptoms this season, we recommend:

-Staying warm, but avoiding direct heat sources
-Using a humidifier or adding moisture to your environment
-Protecting your eyes from wind and cold with sunglasses or moisture chamber glasses
-Drinking plenty of water
-Taking regular breaks from screens
-regular use of eye drops
