Understanding the Different Types of DBS Checks: Basic, Standard, and Enhanced
The Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check is an important part of safeguarding — especially in the care sector. It helps employers make safer recruitment decisions by revealing any relevant criminal history of applicants. But did you know there are different levels of DBS checks depending on the role? Let’s break them down:
✅ Basic DBS Check
Shows any unspent convictions or conditional cautions. It’s suitable for roles that don’t involve working directly with vulnerable people but still require trust and responsibility.
✅ Standard DBS Check
Includes details of both spent and unspent convictions, cautions, reprimands, and warnings from the Police National Computer. This level is often required for roles in security, law, or certain administrative positions within care.
✅ Enhanced DBS Check
The most detailed check. It includes everything from the Standard check plus any additional information held by local police that may be relevant to the role. This is essential for positions involving direct contact with children or vulnerable adults, such as care assistants or nurses.
At RAL Community Care, we ensure our staff undergo the necessary DBS checks to maintain the highest level of trust, safety, and professionalism in the care we provide.
